I was not looking to replace my wife's laptop with the ones available on the market today. I don't see any benefit for her use case. Her main complaint was that battery would not hold a charge like it did when it was new. The battery had 756 cycles and said to service it now. I was looking to do the battery swap myself but could not find a genuine OEM battery that I could trust. eBay batteries had reports and reviews that state around 1 year they would start failing again. Apple charges $129 for the battery and labor which includes a 1 year warranty. I decided to have Apple replace it same day in store.

I replaced the stock 5400 rpm HDD during the first week of ownership back in 2012 with Samsung 256GB SSD. The last major upgrade was to bump the RAM to the maximum known capacity. Apple states 8GB but online many users have gone to 16GB. I picked up Crucial MAC RAM for $49.99 shipped for 16GB. I did the upgrade myself since it was really simple and straight forward. Cleaned out some of the dust inside the laptop too while I was in there.

I might replace her optical drive with a Western Digital 750GB 7.2k RPM drive down the road using an optical HDD caddy. I know this is not the most powerful laptop but for her use case and how easy it is to upgrade makes it perfect for her.
