I've read about marks being left on the screen when closing the lid of Macbooks but I didn't expect it to happen on my Macbook Pro (late 2007 model) because the keyboard keys are slightly recessed and rounded.
Well, technically the problem didn't arise from the keys but rather that sharp edge just below the spacebar and above the trackpad. What I have now is a thin line that's about 1" to 2" across. It makes the screen look slightly faded in that area. I figured that it came from that spot below the spacebar after placing a sticky note just below it and observing where it touches once the lid closes.
I guess it's not a terrible problem but it is kind of annoying. It especially annoys me to think that I might get a little less when re-selling the computer because of it![]()
Just wanted to let those of you who use the same computer know. It'd be good to place a cloth or something over that area when shutting the lid and transporting the computer. I'm guessing it must have been slightly squeezed in that area of the screen at one point or another while the lid was closed.![]()

Thanks for the warning , sorry you had to find out this way , what size is your MBP?
-
It's the 15" model.
I tried wiping the area with a damp cloth but nothing seems to help -
Bummer. Hopefully it doesn't have any effects on the new 2009 17" models. That's what I was afriad of. Still plan on waiting a little bit to see if Apple decides to put Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 on the 17" plus USB 3.0. Hopefully the keyboard mark on the screen issues will be solved.
Is your laptop still under warranty? Maybe you could show Apple the issue and prove it to them that its the hardware causing it. Hopefully they'd repair it with or without a warranty. Are you near an Apple store? -
Nope. I bought it two years ago and there are no Apple stores nearby. I'm sure they'd say it's not "bad enough" to warrant a fix even if I had purchased the extended warranty though.

sorry to hear your story. i guess u'll just have to live with it.

I would sell it and buy an iMac but I hate the glossy screen. Hopefully Apple will come around and give a matte option like they did for the Macbook.

MarWare's Protection Paks for MacBook Pros include a thick microfiber cloth cover for the keyboard that also "buffers" the area you're describing, as well as being a great screen cleaning cloth, etc. Check them out at MarWare.com/ or Amazon.

i just bought a 13" mbp and i noticed that there was keyboard patterns developing on my screen -_-
i put the screen wiping cloth in between the keyboard and the screen when i close it now, hopefully that helps -
Is this the latest 13"? That's what I hate about these edge-to-edge displays, they looks super nice, but have issues it seems.

So what do we need to buy screen/keyboard protector any recommendations?
-
Go to NAPA auto parts and get Meguiars mirror glaze clear plastic cleaner. Works great for removing fine scratches on plastic.
-
It doesn't feel like a scratch. I think that maybe it was really hot when I closed the lid and when the screen touched that part it somehow made the spot slightly lighter.
It's not THAT bad of a problem but it's annoying to me because I'm OCD about this kind of stuff. I think a lot of people wouldn't notice or care. With that in mind, how much do you guys think I could fetch for this computer? The specs are in the sig.
Thanks! -
Not that it'll help you since it's already too late, but I buy cheap microfiber cleaning cloths from WalMart and keep them between the keyboard and screen when I close it. They're like $5 for a 3 pack however you may have to trim them down (or live with the excess). I've been doing it for my past two laptops and haven't seen a mark on them. Only drawback is the cheaper cloths shed a little so you may notice some lint on the screen once in a while... luckily you have a cloth to wipe it off with.

After some more observation, I think that the mark was not caused by the keyboard touching the screen but rather by heat. When the computer is off, I can't see the mark on the screen at all. I also can't feel anything on the screen when I touch it. It's perfectly smooth.
I used to leave the battery out but after noticing that the computer runs faster with the battery in, I started just leaving it in. I also noticed that the computer gets considerably hotter with the battery in.
My guess is that maybe the heat from this part of the computer that sits closer to the screen or maybe even touches it, caused the display to look slightly washed out in the area..
