Just did some upgrading on my iBook G4.

    1. Replaced the 512 MB memory module with a 1 GB module from crucial.com
    2. Replaced the 60 GB 4200 rpm hard drive with an 80 GB 5400 rpm drive (Seagate 5400.3).

It gave OSX a nice kick in the pants! Everything is much quicker now. The laptop runs cooler now too. The old 4200 rpm drive was labeled as consuming 1.0 A at idle, while the new 5400 rpm drive only consumes 0.45 A at idle. Less than half the power consumption! This should help not only with cooling, but also with battery run time as well.

The memory was a piece of cake to swap. The hard drive was major surgery! Had to practically disassemble the entire notebook to swap the drive. I followed the HOWTO at ifixit.com which made it easier - I don't know how anyone could get through that without seeing a HOWTO on it first. I hope it's not this painful on newer models.

your lucky, when i delved into my ibook to upgrade the HD, the power button connector snapped off the mobo, effectivelly bricking my ibook. luckily it still had some warranty left and the local shop did it on warranty.
