Actually, the source is not Engadget, they're not really into starting rumors and are warning this is probably not true. Rarely does Engadget break news, they just blog about rumors and news.
This is the true source MacScoop:

Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to hear more about it.

Yes, this was actually not a very new rumor. This seems more of a confirmation.
I forgot which company it was, but another company was aparantly contracted to develop a new unit. -
Thanks for the clarification.

I think this would make sense in the Apple lineup to include an ultra portable. I'm looking forward to it.

I wonder what's there definition of super-slim. 1 inch is pretty much as far as you can go. Anything thinner and you'd have to cut components and increase your heat budget. I suppose keeping to IGPs and using Intel's upcoming LV chips they could keep the heat down. The optical drive would be interesting though since the MBP is already using a super-slim model, which I thought was already pretty much custom developed so they'd have to go to some super-super-slim design.
Anyways, I personally wouldn't buy a 12" model since I think you'd be sacrificing too many features. A 13.3" model would be nice but that would overlap with the MB. Would be nice for Apple to replace the 15.4" form factor with a 14.1" one. This may well be what's happening if Apple intends to be releasing a 15.4" MB. And with the existing 17" size, Apple would have the whole spectrum covered, although the logistics of such a diverse product line will be more complicated. -
Yes, but many people, specially old 12" Powerbook owners have been clamoring for a slimmer and lighter device than the Macbook. I think that if Apple manages to release a 12" that is lighter and more portable - the Macbook is fatter than the MBP - there will be a quite considerable market for it. Alongside with the also rumored 15.4" Macbook non-pro, Apple notebook lineup would be far more complete.

This better have a dedicated graphics card or at least the new GMA X3000 (when it's out on january), if not it shall not be considered "pro" :\
If it does though, it'll be the best 12'' laptop out there
-
Looks sweet, looking forward to seeing what they do with it.
-
Well, I'm guessing that the MB will be getting the GMA x3000. A friend of mine said that some rumors are indicating that the 12" will have a dedicated graphic card, but probably not the x1600.
-
Yeah I know, probably the 12'' MBP will be getting something like a GF Go 7300 or an X1400.
Anyways if you say the MB will be getting GMA X3000, I'm off with the regular MacBook. I'm not willing to pay an extra 500-600 $ for a better GPU and some less weight
-
Yeah, the only thing I want now... is a 15" MB. I like having the video card in the MBP, but I'd rather pay a few hundred less (I estimate the x1600 costing about $300 to the consumer) and have an hour or more extra battery life.
I honestly can't deal with anything less than a 15". I eat up my desktop real estate heh
