i love that Plugins can be made for quicklook, easily one of the best features and it is only getting better, now if we could just see some Stacks updates ^_^

i am reviving this thread with a link to a site that provides quite a few cool little os x how to's from terminal command line to other simple tweaks
http://osxdaily.com/index.php
and I am hoping that reviving this thread will force Xander to provide more cool links and GUI custimization. -
Sorry, I don't really have anything particularly good to mention. Anyways...
OnyX 1.9 for Leopard is available. In case you're not aware of this app, check it out, it's Freeware.
The other day I read The Ultimate Leopard Tweaking Guide. Now that it has been posted on several sites, including TUAW, AppleTell's server seems to be suffering. In the meantime, you can still access the guide via Google Cache. Hopefully they will sort things out and be back soon. One application from the guide that caught my eye was Visage Login. This app allows you to easily customize the login window. It's Freeware and it works for several flavors of OS X as well. -

With 10.5.2 you can now easily turn the Menu Bar translucency on and off, just look for the checkbox in the Desktop & Screen Savers preference pane. You also get some additional options for Stacks. And tons more too. Run Software Update or get the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
Found these HUDz posted to InsanelyMac the other day. The sources are MacThemes and deviantART.
Download HERE
Install MacOSX.tif here: /System/Library/CoreServices/LoginWindow/Contents/Resources/
Everything else goes here: /System/Library/CoreServices/LoginWindow/Contents/Resources/English.lproj
Some for VLC too. There is another version included that has more buttons, but I like this version better.
Download HERE
First you need to have VLC Media Player installed, then place the files here:
/Applications/VLC/Contents/Resources/ -
yo nice HUDS, I absolutely love that they were able to update the look of those windows, we should send feedback to Apple on this one for sure!
hey I figured I would post my "fn" app up here since it is somewhat of a GUI customization in that it quickly switches a preference.
for those that don't know what "fn" is take a look at the README included in the .dmg
Download: fn_1.1.dmg
also you can check out another thread to learn more:

here my re HUDization
nice new look:
nice new icon:
nicer newer icon:
I know exactly how these were made I think I might take a shot at designing some more, maybe trying to do one for the main login window, it is all just done using Interface Builder.
what else could I HUDify?
looks like a lot of apps and things aren't really very useful in the HUD style window as you will only get the Exit button at the top left of the window. and it looks like it may not be possible to do the Login window. boo -

i recently learned that it is possible to turn on an option to have hidden applications be transparent in the dock, nothing to crazy but kind of cool for people that have a lot of apps open at once.
Enable transparent hidden Dock icons:
Code:defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool YES
Code:defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool NO
Code:killall Dock
Code:defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool YES && killall Dock
and for the record, CandyBar 3 is awesome, doing everything yourself manually is definitely possible, but you run into a lot of issues, with CandyBar it takes care of all of those issues, which can be fixed, all automaticly. -
Arnt hidden programs transparent in the dock by default?
But I guess if someone wanted to turn it off, then it could come in useful. -
no, they aren't.
-
Oh, I honestly dont remember turning on an option to make them transparent, but mine are.
Maybe I did, and I just don't remember. -
hey just learned something cool today about Finder column view, which is obviously the best view ever!
I always found it annoying to have to re-size or double click the size button to autosize the column.
if you just press Alt/Option+Drag the Column Size button it will change the size of every column, and also set this as the new default column size.
very useful to me, hopefully to others as well. -

Thx a lot! -
I got an external hard drive and the backup software it came with put an icon on my menu bar. I deleted the application and it's still there. Command-drag doesn't work on it, so how do I get rid of it?

here's a cool one that is definitely not for the people new to GUI customization:
I still use just the regular black apple icon normally, but whenever it is selected that is what shows up. I am slowly but surely building an entire look to the OS that completely suits my taste.
not extremely difficult to do, but does require a small amount of Terminal knowledge.
haha, just looking around at my OS, I may have a little problem, haha:

Just saw this site recently, nothing really interesting for me, but maybe someone else will find a new dock there.
Has a bunch of dock customizations.

I just re-did all my icons and stuff:
-
whoa.........

-
I just used CandyBar (just bought that little app, awesome stuff).
And then just lurk around deviantart, the Mac Icons area and see what you like.
Download what you like and it's just drag-and-drop action -
That looks pretty good, Cndalsi! Just wondering, how many choices are available for icons and such?
-
Nice cdnalsi, did you make all of those or find them some where? If you all are interesed in GUI customization you should definitely check out www.macthemes2.net, pretty much everything you can think of shows up there.

@chargerbaseball25: You can replace pretty much every icon there is. Starting from trash to filetypes, CD/DVD icons, Movies/Photos folders, and more.
@circa86: yeah I know of the place. Couldn't find anything interesting though. Full of Bowtie themes and such, which I hate by the way. All I did was browse through DeviantArt and downloaded icons.
Now I'm working on a wooden Apple logo for the top left logoI also wanna do a wooden spotlight icon and background (when clicked). (Also using Architect to customize those - love that little software)
I'll post another pic when I'm done...
