I'm holding out on my Macbook purchase until Leopard is released. I am wondering if you guys could tell me from past experience, how far in advance Apple is expected to be announcing the release date for the new OS. Thanks!

I would just buy the MacBook right now. Apple can postpone Leopard again just like it did in June. Anyway, Leopard will cost just $69 if you are a student.

(My college will give me leopard for free! YEA!)

I don't think Apple ever sets a formal release date on their products. Usually two weeks before, they start quietly giving out invitations to the press for an upcoming event, which with the internet everyone knows about, and they leave sufficient hints so that everyone can form an opinion of what's coming. Of course, you can never really know what the event is announcing until you're there, and even then there is the famous "one more thing" to keep you in suspense the whole time.

Apple said October of this year. OS X releases are usually on a Friday if memory serves so look no later than October 26. In fact, that would be my guess as they seem to like to wait til the last possible moment these days.

    Thanks, stealthsniper ;).

First of all, I have no "inside sources". I read rumour sites, I look at past trends, I see when the product was last updated to make an educated guess.

Right now, based on the beta releases Apple is putting out, Leopard is on track for an October release. Early October, late October, we don't know. But according to developers who are getting betas of it, its on track for October.

If there is an Apple event soon, it will most likely be in October. It is probably going to cover Leopard and maybe updated MacBooks, but don't expect an iPhone Nano or ultraportable MacBook Pro just yet.

I really hope it's in early October. I'm moving to Ireland on the 30th and need to get a notebook before then. I'm hoping if they don't launch the OS, that Apple will at least update the Macbook Pro with a 160gb hard drive for the base model or upgrade the graphics card on the white Macbook..

I would say, don't expect the MacBook to get a graphics card unless Apple decides to re-position it for prosumer market (similar to what they did to the iMac).

Expect an ultraportable MBP in 2008, and that will most likely be the one with the dedicated graphics.

Don't expect it early in October. Apple has never released an OS upgrade early in the month. It's always the last part of the month. Look at the iPhone release date, June 30th.

Not that this is any sort of real information, but a few of my buddies that have the developer's release of Leopard have told me that the most recent seeds have been quite stable and fairly bug-free, so they think Leopard is reaching gold. That doesn't mean that it's necessarily done or that it'll be released early and won't be delayed, but I would guess early-mid October right now, personally.

I'm guessing your talking about the apple show in paris. I highly doubt apple will release leapord then. They have in the past few years had very little to do with the show. At best I think you will get the iPhone for europe at this event.

What do you mean? If you're talking about why I need the notebook before I move, it's because I only have a desktop and need something portable to keep up with client work because I freelance graphic design and won't have my desktop shipped until a lot later.

Keep an eye on Thinksecret and Appleinsider. They'll probably have info when Leopard goes golden master. Once that happens we'll probably see it arrive in stores 2-3 weeks later. I would expect Leopard to ship the end of October...as in the last day. :)

I just ordered my MBP. I called apple and asked what they are doing with the up coming release. Since I got it for my "Business" (they didn't really push it) they gave me a discount equal to the price of Leopard about 4%. So now I don't have to wait!!!!

just thought I would let you know.

Umm, almost instantly. Only if you order from the Apple online store will you get a guaranteed Leopard image on the drive and Leopard install discs.

Which Macs may not get Leopard instantly? Resellers, Amazon and even the Apple retail store. The Apple retail store will sell Tiger imaged machines with Leopard upgrade CD's at time of purchase for at least a week or so after the Leopard release.
