I finally watched the WDDC presentation on Lion and I really like the new mail interface. I think mail is a bit clumsy in SL and would love to get Lion for that reason.

I hope it's today since the apple stores received those shipments that were to be opened today. So hopefully those shipments were posters about Lion, or new hardware that has lion preinstalled.

Not a knock against you, but it's a shame of what the internet has turned people into. A retail store can't even get shipments of "something" we have no knowledge about without people trying to uncover secrets with zero knowledge (other than rumors) and blasting it all over the web. Apple's own employees blast their secrets on the web. Who else would know or care that a store got shipments of "something". If it's Lion related or a new Macbook Air then so be it but let's not hype ourselves up over information that has not been confirmed.
So funny how the public blames Apple for so much hype creation. The public does that just fine on their own. ;)

It has more to do with marketing than the public. By announcing a rather vague release date and giving presentations for the OS on their website and in person, speculation will of course be rife. This is exactly what Apple wants. They have always excelled at marketing their products.

Additionally, this level of speculation always follows Apple products. Lion is actually riding on the coattails of other, more popular releases (such as the iPhone or iPad) in terms of having people speculate about it. There wasn't much mainstream attention given to Apple OS releases in the past but, due to their popularity over the years (garnered from the iPod, iPhone, and now iPad), people are starting to pay more attention to everything that Apple does. Before any OS rumors were circulated amongst Mac fans. Now OS rumors make headlines on tech news sites and even get mentions on local/national news programs.

Apple helped create this hype machine but the public has done a good job of carrying it on their own as of now. I had a feeling that the 14th wasn't going to happen. Then again, I can patiently wait for Lion. I actually want to see what my university bookstore does with Lion. Right now they are essentially giving away copies of Snow Leopard to students. I am curious to see if they will do the same with Lion. Though $30 is definitely affordable, I could also take that money and spend it towards Mayhem Fest instead.

I dont think the hype for Leopard was that big, maybe in certain tech circles but Snow Leopard and Lion definitely have more anticipation and hype to them.

Spotlight, spaces, quick look, time machine, boot camp, ppc concerns - there was plenty to hype and hype there was plenty.

Snow leopard was very developer oriented by nature. I'm not sure if that's what you meant. Lion seems very consumer oriented this round.

I didn't see much hype outside of the Mac circle. They were both mentioned on tech blog sites (mainly because Leopard was running on Intel hardware) but I didn't really see much mainstream news coverage. Lion, on the other hand, received a mention on my local news when it was showed off at WWDC and they even mentioned it a few times on the 14th as the possible release date. I don't remember that type of coverage for Leopard or Snow Leopard outside of the Cult of Mac. Of course, it still pales in comparison to iPad, iPhone, and even iPod speculation.
