I am soon going to purchase either a MacBook or a MacBook Pro. Seeing how the Canadian dollar is doing so well, purchasing the notebook down in the states might save me quite a bit. Now, my main concern is warranty and support. Would I still be able to receive support back in Canada and if I wanted to purchase AppleCare, would it still be possible?

Yes and yes. It's a worldwide warranty, and you can buy AppleCare anytime in the first year (while it's still under the original warranty).
-
Hey, I live in Canada and bought my MacBook a few weeks ago while I was in San Fran. As Starlight says, the warranty is covered in Canada and so is the AppleCare.
Now Apple just needs to drop their prices here to make it more affordable. -
Don't they charge you with customs once you are on the border?
If so, make sure that you threw the packaging away. -
I just heard that for the first time in 31 years the US $ and the Canadian $ have reached parity.

I looked into this some more and under NAFTA, anything that is made in the USA or Canada, or does not say it isn't, is not subject to duties. So does anyone have any pictures of a MBP box? It probably does say "Made in China" but if it doesn't then I don't have to worry about duties.
-
My box says, "Designed by Apple in California" and "Assembled in China."
-
The MacBook box said the same as Xander's
-
Indeed, in the NAFTA disclosure, any electronics made in North America don't get charged duties. However, 99% of all electronics aren't made here, so it's kinda stupid
And at the border you should declare what you buy, because it's often not worth the risk. Because of the rising dollars, searches are more common and if they find that you lied and did not declare, you could face penalties. -
Only you can decide for yourself it it's worth it but the MBP I'm interested in is $200 cheaper in the US. For me, it isn't worth it to drive to Buffalo (I'm in Toronto) which would likely cost me about $100 in expenses to save what would then be $100. YMMV
It is annoying, however, that with the dollars at par that the US price is 10% lower. -
Yeah... it's really not worth it if I have to pay duties on it. It will come to about the same price. I live on campus so it's much more convenient to walk down to the campus store and buy it there... =P

Works out to be the same then. I'd have to pay taxes twice. =(

I'll be in Florida for 2 weeks soon
I plan on purchasing a Vostro 1500 from Dell and get it delivered to my hotel
Since I'm out for more than a week, my duty free allowance is $750
The laptop as configured will be about $900,
So I assume I'll only pay tax on $150 at the border
A good deal, considering it's about $300 difference for the (almost) same laptop between Canada and USA
-
The question is not the duties, the question is paying for it. I am going to boston for two weeks, and I want to pick up two of those Vostro computers, HOWEVER, I do not have an American paypal address, or an American credit card.
From what I understand there is no more duty on importing electronics from the States so I'm not that concerned. -
rbsx, yes, I could have a problem paying for my Vostro at Dell.com
Being from Canada, I just placed my order at Dell.com a few moments ago,,,,to be delivered to an American address in Florida (my friend's house)
When I entered my credit card info, it asked for the billing address for the credit card.
The form wouldn't allow me to enter a Canadian address, so I entered my friend's US address.
So now the credit card billing address doesn't match what is registered with my card.
My order is in process, so we'll see if Dell flags the mismatch and stops the order...... -
update
just checked my order status on line and it's now: "In Production"
So it looks like they accepted my Canadian creid card with an (incorrect) USA address
From Dell status page:
"In Production
Upon approval of payment for your order, the order will be In Production. Production time includes obtaining the parts, assembly or build time, and shipping preparations/transit to the carrier. Shipping preparations will vary based on type of order and size." -
