All of a sudden I am getting a very loud two second long beep when starting up my mac. It starts just before the chime. Any idea what this noise is and how to eliminate it?

Check out the on/off button. It sounds like it's stuck and the noise is feedback from it giving repeated signals to turn the computer on.

Good catch !! Glad to see you enjoyed it. That was the problem. The power switch was stuck as it hadn't retracted properly.
