I'm shopping for a Notebook and thinking about a MAC Pro.
I was just wondering.
Apple charges $700 to go from a 2GB to 4GB RAM. I think that's quite a lot.
Could I instead purchase 2 sticks of this RAM? .... CLICK ME. Seems like the Type # matches up, but I just want to make sure. I rather pay $200 for an RAM upgrade than $700. Also is installing RAM in a MAC Pro as easy as regular notebooks?
Also I plan on using bootcamp for 64bit Vista. Would I have any problems with drivers or what not?

-
The memory looks good to me--I don't know as far as your Vista is concerned.
-
stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
vista should be fine with bootcamp. i know that parallels wont read a 64 bit but vm fusion does. and your ram should work, just make sure to get the right speed (i dont know what speed the MBP uses)
-
upgrading frm manufacturers is usally too costly until unless on offer
so threfore i too echo the above osts yes id rather recomentd tht u buy one urself
i reckon bootcamp would run vista 64bit just fine
Vmfusion would definately recognize the 4Gb of ram in my opinion
jus be aware that you buy the right latency of RAM and from a good online dealer while your at it in case the RAM is faulty
cheers
all the best -
I got my 4GB from for $200, no problems.
These are Intel mainboards so they run with any memory of the correct spec.
I always just use DealRam to find appropriate memory. $700 is ridiculous. -

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303491 Just disregard the 1gb max that's stated.. I grabbed this quickly for a pictoral version of how to install memory. Keep your old memory module if you replace it, incase you have to send your MBP in for service.

Wait a minute! That RAM is 200-Pin. That's would would work for the MacBook or MacBook Pro, but not the Mac Pro (Desktop). Did mean the Mac Pro, it's not a notebook? You need 240-Pin RAM for the Mac Pro.
And you will run into some minor issues with 64-Bit Vista through Boot Camp Beta. Boot Camp Beta currently only supports 32-Bit versions of Windows. I haven't tried 64-Bit Windows, but I've read that even after finding all the drivers some things still don't work properly (for example, the iSight). Though I haven't been actively looking for information about 64-Bit Windows on Boot Camp. I'm hoping that when Leopard is released and Boot Camp is final, just maybe Apple will support 64-Bit Windows. -
i assume ur buying the macBOOK pro? .. wel... if u are ... then the ram uv linked to will work just fine ... ddr2 667MHz 200pin ram chips will work absolutely fine with ur new macbook pro ... ahmm... just be mindful that you'll have to buy 2 of those in order to get 4 GB of ram... (because the ram that will come with the macbook pro will be 2x1GB and hence buying one will get u 3GB of ram) ...
transcend is a good company ... that ram should work well .. i personally chose crucial ram ... but transcend should work .. -
A Mac Pro is a desktop machine...that's notebook RAM. It won't fit in the DIMM slots.
If you're talking about the MBP, I would personally recommend you get them from tried-and-tested manufacturers like Crucial or G-Skill. -
Hey thanks for pointing that out for me. I didn't know the MAC-Pro used Desktop RAM. That link you provided is perfect and still cheap enough
I'll be buying two 2GB Sticks and just save the installed sticks just incase.
BTW is Apple really releasing Leopard in Oct? How much would leopard be around in price? Would it be around the same price as Tiger single user $129?
If so I would rather get it MAC-Pro now so I can at least half Tiger for free. -
woah woah!!! .. hold on there.... are u getting a notebook or a desktop...?! ur confusing everyone including urslf...
if u'ld be a li'll clearer with the terms u use ... it'll be mighty helpful... are u getting a macbook pro or a mac pro? the macbook pro is a notebook .. the mac pro is a desktop ... in ur first post uv referred to a notebook mac pro .. (such a system does not exist!) it's either a notebook macbook pro .. or a desktop mac pro ... -
Yeah, I'm confused as well.
MacBook Pro (Notebook) or Mac Pro (Desktop)
Which one are you looking to buy RAM for? -
LOL, I never adapted or Updated the proper terms in my vocabulary.
I call anything with a screen that Folds, a Notebook or Laptop.
And all Towers or non-portables that need an external screen, a Desktop.
Sorry about the confusion, but I did mention MAC-Pro in my OP.
I need RAM for Mac Pro (Desktop) -
yes... u mentioned mac pro .. but u mentioned that u were shopping for a notebook ...
...
so .. incase its a mac pro (desktop) .. that ur searching for... a 200 pin ram chip will not do .. if my memory serves me correct a 240 pin ram chip is what u need... -
Cool. As long as you know what you're talking about it's all good
.
Leopard is expected to be released in October. As with all technology, there is also a possibility that the Mac Pro's hardware will be updated. If not in October, I expect sometime soon thereafter. I don't follow Mac Pro rumors too closely, but MacRumors does. Also, I've heard DX10 GPUs are coming to the Mac Pro as well. Peace. -
Looks like quad-core is next(according to your link). But I'm not even going to kill myself trying to keep up with the latest tech. I seriously hate waiting for the next. What the MacPro has to offer should hold me down for at least 2-4 years. Depending how fast technology moves.
Also I choosing MAC based on the Price. All other PC's with similar Graphics and Processor power cost even more. IMO Mac Pro (Desktop) is decent in price. And all this time I thought they were High Priced. -
Man, you're still really confusing me. The Mac Pro features Quad-core Xeons right now, with the option of dual Xeons for 8-core. And it is REALLY expensive compared to building your own desktop. Of course, if you're comparing it to other dual-Xeon desktops, it may not be that bad. But do you really need that? It's not even that good for gaming.
-
Your confusing me .........
On the Apple store, it says nothing about Quad-core. And how is it not good for gaming when it has NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 256MB SDRAM.
Am I missing something here? -
You're talking about the MacBook Pro (MBP) here. You previously said you wanted to purchase the Mac Pro which is a desktop. They are two completely different computers. The link I posted before from MacRumors was also about the Mac Pro and potentially using Penryn, not the MBP. I thought I'd trow in some abbreviations to add some more confusion
.
-
Oh god, you guys are killing me with using the exact proper terms.
Ok it's picture time .......Here is what I plan on getting. The only Apple upgrade/config I will be doing is a $150 upgreade to a 7200rpm drive.
-
No, you're killing me
. It's like you're asking me for a Banana, but expecting that I really know you want an Orange. Or something like that.
So you want the 15" 2.4GHz MacBook Pro. Then the original link to RAM you posted is correct. End of story... hopefully. Peace. -
Yes, exactly.
Thanks. But you guys are still anal about exact titles.
-
SaferSephiroth The calamity from within
LOL, i can't stop laughing.
-
No, they're not. You started out saying you wanted a notebook, but talked about a desktop system. Then when people asked you about it, you said that yeah, you wanted a desktop system. Then you posted links to a notebook again.
Of course people are confused!
The Macbook Pro is a laptop and uses normal laptop RAM. The Mac Pro is a desktop. -
no we're not anal at all.. to be honest.. uv been quite asinine regarding ur descriptions and ur notations
... despite our efforts to try and clarify ... even after a few of us clearly asked u whether u wanted a macbook pro (notebook) or a mac pro (desktop) .. u still went ahead and kept using mac pro for ur description of what u wanted... and now u finally say u want a notebook ... that's like having two porsche's in a showroom... a 911 turbo and a 911 carrera s and then asking for the keys to testdrive the porsche 911 !!
anyways... the crucial ram u enlisted yesterday will work fine for MACBOOK PRO .. -
Dude, I like you and all, but seriously, this isn't being anal. You said you wanted a Mac Pro, then said you wanted a desktop, and you expect us to know that you really wanted a Macbook Pro notebook. Seriously, dude.
-
WOW Ok, Just a poking fun. Now you guys are just anal. LOL
BTW .... The first few posters seem to know exactly what I meant, but yes I do admit I should of put MACbook Pro instead of MAC pro. But then again I did state that the # models matched
Thanks for the help. -
Uh...how is it being "anal" to point out that your own posts directly contradicted each other multiple times? It got more confusing as it went, as you specifically said you were looking at a desktop, not laptop.
-
I never knew that a Mac desktop was referred to as a MAC Pro. So in my original post I referred to the MACBook Pro as a MAC Pro. I'm pretty sure plenty of people made that mistake. So after a few posts(that knew what I was talking about), someone claimed that I needed differ type of RAM because he thought I meant the Desktop being I stated MAC pro. That's when all the confusion on both sides began.
As for calling you guys anal ..... Like I said in my previous post, I was only poking fun.(If you bothered to read that). It's not that serious, unless you really are anal.
Anyway Problem solved ....My Original link is good. That's all I wanted to know.
