Hi,
I'm pretty new to MAC in general. Just purchased a MBA and using win 7.
How can one do like a regular laptop...I want to make the lcd shut itself as i'm closing the lid. In my old lenovo x301 i can set that in win 7. But with this MBA...when closing the lid the lcd is still running even if i set the lcd to be shut after 5 mins....
any idea???

You should trying using search before making new threads. It's a very common question. Use a program called InsomniaX; Google it.
It's not a highly recommended thing to do, due to heat issues, on the MBP not sure on the MBA's tho. -
Disagree. Heat rumor is based on misconception that ventilation is through keyboard. With the display off, the unit generates even less heat.
Ask Apple.
Would Apple sell this, if heat were an issue?

i am not sure about the internals, but the exterior DEFINITELY heats up way more than normal when you have the LCD closed and off but the CPU still running at normal speeds.
your keyboard gets too hot to touch.
if you put your laptop to sleep or lowest idle setting, that may be a different story....
EDIT: talking about macbook pro 13" 2010 -
Even with my undervolted MBA, I can see the temp rise pretty high while watching 1080p HD vids on a external screen, or doing anything that is running the MBA hard. Just putting a warning out there. It's your computer, you do what you want.

i already installed insomia on mac os...I'm currently running Win 7...and the only practical solution i found so far was to dim the lcd down before closing it.
-
not getting onto the design concepts...
my MBP 13" runs around 7º or 8º C hotter doing the same exact things with the lid closed. -
So, would you say that it exceeds temperatures of concern?
-
the fans can take care of it... its not a concern...
your fan(s) might wear out faster though...
you might have to manually spin them up to keep it as cool as you might want it to be.
I have better luck just running it with the display up... its no big deal to me, if i don't want to use it, i just turn the backlight off.
Its not just because the lid blocks off the keyboard airflow, its because of the hinge shape, and the back vent actually gets smaller as more flow is blocked by the hinge... and more airflow is pushed from the back vent up toward the screen.
