Sorry for another "switcher" thread... I just have a couple questions to ask about the MacBook Pro before I take the plunge.

    Right now, I'm looking at the 15" MBP / 2.4 GHz / 256MB 8600M GT.

How important is 7200 rpm vs 5400 rpm on the hard drive?

    XP Pro vs Vista...

I know this might not be the best place to ask for a comparison of two Windows OSs, but if I buy a copy of XP Pro to run on my MBP via Boot Camp (I've heard that some DX9 games run slower on Vista), will it be inconvenient to upgrade to Vista down the line? Should I just go for Vista from the start?

I'll be using the laptop mostly for schoolwork and gaming. I might mess around with the music- and movie-making apps as well.

i'd just buy Vista...it will get better later on. In fact I heard driver support in vista for MBP is better than XP.

as for 7200 rpm vs 5400 rpm hard drive, its not that important, but I would get the best spec possible so i don't cry about it a year later. Plus the 7200 rpm drive is a real winner among notebook drives.

This is the only time a 7200 rpm drive is going to be of any significant use to you. And if you get serious you will still want an external drive anyways. However, for this kind of stuff you also definitely want to stick with XP. Audio stuff in Vista is particularly poor right now for low latency work.

I like gaming, but I'm sticking with XP as I don't see any games that I can't live without coming out for at least a year that won't run on DX 9.

    Just my 2 cents.
