Hey guys, is there anyway to make the keyboard automatically turn off the backlight when watching movies in Quicktime or VLC? I hate having to manually turn it off every time I watch a movie

I think the media player "Plex" can turn off your backlight when in full screen.

its not hard, just annoying having to always turn it off, then back on after. I'll check out Plex!

I had the exact same question when I was watching a movie yesterday.

You will find some interesting info here on the same topic:
How to make the keyboard backlight automatically turn off in fullscreen mode - MacRumors Forums

    To summarize:
    - Check Plex as it seems that it has the option to turn off the backlit when going into full screen mode
    - Use the keyboard settings to automatically turn off the illumination after a set period. It lights up again when you touch the trackpad or any key. Check System Preferences -> Keyboard and put delay slider to 1 minute for example.
    - Use an applescript that turns backlit on or off. You'll need to do some programming though to interface with your video player software.

you can probably set it to turn off with some kind of mouse gesture with betterTouchTool.

Nope, BTT allows you to use Gestures to increase or decrease illuminance similar to the keyboard buttons, but not a single "off" command and you will need to repeat the gesture until the luminance is zero.
