I'm a fast touch typist, and yes I use the caps lock key. On more than a few occasions when I tried to engage caps lock, it wasn't until the word after the one I intended to type in all caps comes out all caps. For a little bit I thought there's something wrong with my keyboard or that I just went ahead of myself, then I realized Apple intentionally put in this delay when trying to engage caps lock.

So, is it possible to remove this delay? Is this an OS X thing or just on a Macbook? It is very annoying. I have not come across any articles that says it can. Only a bunch of people questioning why there's a caps lock key at all. Am I the only one that use the caps lock

Weird, I don't have this delay, I can push random letters quick and then hit the caps and it will change right away.

I don't have a caps lock delay...but I have noticed that sometimes the caps lock will not engage, depending on how I push the button.

as in, if I push the Caps Lock button in the lower right or lower left corner, chances are good the caps lock will not register the button press. top left, center or right are almost all 100% by comparison.

a bit of shoddy engineering on that key, I guess.

If you push the Caps Lock key quick it will not engage. "Quick" is relative, I know, but if you push it an it engages, keep trying to push it quicker and you'll see that it doesn't engage.

As far as I'm concerned, the Caps Lock key should be removed from the keyboard completely. It's a relic left over from the Typewriter and is taking up valuable keyboard real estate.

BUT THEN HOW WOULD PEOPLE TYPE LIKE THIS!!11!!1!! :p

Yeah, if I hit my caps key reallly fast it doesn't engage, but his problem seems to be that it takes a while to kick in when it is engaged.

I noticed this also but it doesn't bother me that much, I use the shift key for quick cap access.

    Exactly my point! ;)

The way I interpreted his post is that he touch types, and because of that he's hitting the Caps Lock key so quickly that it doesn't engage, not that there is a delay.

It's both - sometimes it doesn't register because I tapped it too fast, other times I slowed my pace a bit to engage it, but by the time it kicks in I'm typing the next word.

You gotta tab it really fast for it to happen when trying to turn on caps lock (but there's no delay when disengaging it). I've read that Apple did this so people don't inadvertently engage caps lock. Really don't know why it's necessary.. I guess many people don't notice this. If I'm really trying hard (like when I have something to proof doing a typing test), I can pound 90wpm @97% accuracy.

It's not too hard to slow myself a split second, just an annoyance when I have to adjust myself when I switch from the PC.

It's been like that for years on Macs. It's not that there's an actual delay, because it's not, it doesn't instantly engage with a "quick" tap. I'm sure Apple designed this purposely as it makes sense anyway. During normal typing it's not common to use the caps lock key so to prevent accidentally engaging it I'm sure Apple designed to be pressed a bit harder to make it active. Anyone using caps lock generally is typing more than a couple of words so it makes sense that you would need to make sure it's engaged by pressing a bit harder. Just my opinion.

So your suggesting that when people are writing out TITLES they must hold down the shift key the entire time or can we propose a hotkey for this, similar to bold, italics and underline?

The only thing I can really suggest is that people learn the proper usage of YOUR and YOU'RE (and yes I typed both of those out while holding the shift key down).

I guess it's not a problem if you don't insist on going fast all the time on your keyboard. It's a big annoyance for me when I try to enter some of my passwords that have some consecutive CAPS characters. Yes I can use the shift instead, but I just can't slow down :p

This MBP keyboard is nice. Just did this with the thing on my lap without even trying too hard :D

yep, I have a few touch typists that complain unmercifully when their desktop caps lock key gets sticky from use. one lady proved to me that by ignoring the shift key when there are more than 2 consecutive capitals she can keep her speed way up. With capslock over 117WPM, without I believed she said she will drop just under 100.

and here I am clunking along at about 75 :(

now if I could find a Dvorak keyboard for the uMBP, to keep one girl happy then I would be a happy camper
