I have a question about the Macbook Pro. Can you manually replace the cpu? And is the 2.66Ghz processor a T9550 or a P9600? The only difference is the P9600 uses less power and produces less heat, but I could not find anything on Apple.com that tells me what model the cpu is.

No, the cpu is soldered to the board. I believe it's a P9600 series but other users need to confirm this first. The previous 2.53Ghz was a T series.

just curious why does Apple keep this a secret--when all pc vendors disclose the type of processor and speed along side each other; it is not even detailed in the specs section.

It is infact the T9550. The 2.66 and 2.53's in the MBP's were both from the T series Intel processors, and the 2.4 is a P series.

Ok thanks, because I'm helping a friend decide what notebook to buy. He is considering a mac and I wanted to see if the unibodies had updated their processors.

wouldn't the p series be more advantageous over the t series since it uses less power? i mean disregarding the processor speed, in a laptop to get max battery life having a cpu that uses less power would be a good thing...

I think that it increases the battery life by maybe 5 minutes at the most.

The p9600 and the t9550 are both the exact same speed. However the p9600 is more expensive. I thinks its like $300 retail for the t9550 and about $350 for the p9600. The t9550 is rated at 35watt TDP while the p9600 is 25watt TDP. It makes sense the macbook would use the T9550 because the upgrade option is a 2.93Ghz T9800 (35w), so they are both the same series.

Yes, the T series CPU's also get hotter than the P series, due to the higher Wattage at 35 compared to 25 on the P series.

Higher temperature = fans running at higher RPM = increased battery drain in addition to the higher TPD of the T series processor.

The T processor at idle takes <1 W more than the P series. Only if you stress the CPU at 100% load on battery, will you notice a significant difference in power.

Now is the TDP exactly how much power/heat the processor takes at full 100% load?

I wouldn't get the T series. The P series already gets hot under stress and now what about the T series? They would grill my legs.

Well I remember that back over the Clevo forums there were some choices for the 2.53 p or t series and we had people who got both. When comparing battery life the battery difference when not playing games and stuff was minimal ~5 minutes or so. Although given the fact that no one runs their clevo on battery when gaming.

The T9550 is in the Macbook's and this makes sense because this processor is better than its P9600 counterpart from multi threaded tasks, such as audio and video editing. And since Mac's are bought mostly for their ability to run the final cut studio, it would make sense for Apple to go with the processor more suited for that.

The Macbook has the P8600 for the 2.4GHz.
The T9550 seems to be cheaper for Apple, instead of going for the P9600. The battery life has a minimal difference. -
IMO, it seems to be more like Apple is trying to squeeze out more profits from using this "cheaper" T9550 than the "more expensive" P9600.
