According to Appleinsider, the MBP update has been pushed several weeks due to Apple having to commit resources to achieve an on-time introduction of the MBA at MacWorld. The good news is that the new MBP lineup should include the new multi-trackpad, so it will be worth the long, long wait.
-
-
If the current MB/MBP's can detect double-taps and two-fingered scrolling, then Apple can definitely update their drivers to include a couple more gestures in the existing models. Why abandon existing customers, especially ones who just joined the Apple band-wagon not too long ago?
-
And the wait continues...
-
I think the hardware has changed in the trackpad.
If it were as simple as a driver change to make a normal trackpad multi-touch compatible, I'm pretty sure every notebook maker would have incorporated it by now. -
Well it's possible that the current trackpad can detect only 2 points, and cannot measure distance from each other, making swipes and pinching impossible. Anyway, the multi-touch stuff is more of a gimmick than anything else. I'd probably still use command plus or minus for zoom anyway xD
-
Ill probably wait til the refresh to get my mbpro then...I guess end of February? March sometime?
-
according to me, Appleinsider doesn't actually have any logical information or reason to post anything they ever have posted, alongside every other rumor site on the internet.
also, I recently got word from one of my sources saying people should stop worrying so much about how and when Apple is going to update a computer. -
Nice, another shortcut I can use. Thanks for that!
-
so true. Its not like this next line of cpus is going to be a super duper jump. The Core 2 duos are still fast wether it be santa rosa or penryn. -
Very true. These days when you buy a piece of hardware you'll find that in a little as 24 hours it will be one-upped with an update. Delaying the purchase of a new piece of hardware in anticipation of an update that may not occur would be a waste of time (and agony in not having a new toy to play with
), unless the wait can be justified (i.e. you still have a backup machine you could use for the time being).
-
Im ok with waiting...and if theres a chance the new trackpad will be in it then ill wait and see.
-
when do you think they will arrive>
-
IMHO, buying a computer near the end of its cycle is essentially throwing money out the window. The current MBP is certainly worth at least 15% less than when it was first introduced, so to buy now is to get less for the same money. It's best to buy immediately after a release to maximize your "bang for the buck." Still, buy it when you need it. If you can hold off, that is probably the wisest use of your money.
-
Well the mac insider post said it was delayed a "few weeks" so im thinking 4-6 weeks maybe? That would put it in the March timeframe possibly.
-
Damn it, I wanted a new MBP
-
I wouldn't look for anything new until at least a few (2-4) after the MBA is released. Apple does not want to leach away any sales from the MBA.
-
I'll agree with this post. Since Apple doesn't do end-of-life discounts, you're basically paying the same amount of money for stuff that's outdated (in a comparative sense). It may not make as much difference in terms of functionality, but it sure will when you're considering resell value.
-
True, but if you are in the market for one and there are rumors of a refresh its a no brainer to wait if you can. No sense buying right away and then having the refresh come out three weeks later. Maybe if it was just a processor update, but there could possibly be more that could be changed. -
There are major hardware updates, but the current updates, Merom, Santa Rosa platform, Penryn, and Montevina platform later this year are not that significant. Sure, they're improvements to the previous generation, but the previous generation is not obsolete because of it. Its still more than capable of doing tasks.
So I don't really recommend people waiting forever for the next update, as once that update is out, it'll be replaced by an update in a few months. Get it when you need it. -
Whatever happened to the rumor that Apple was going to make an announcement about MBP updates on the 22nd, which is tomorrow where I'm at?
-
Well, that's possible. Apple typically updates its hardware on Tuesdays...and tomorrow is Tuesday.
-
Hurray for Tuesday's... I find it funny that while Apple releases new stuff on Tuesday's, Microsoft releases patches for Windows. Any guesses on what time in the day the announcement (if any) will be made?
-
Haha, usually in the morning, if so...
Anyway, Apple also releases new versions (I mean, new releases, such as 10.4 --> 10.5 and not 10.5.1 -- 10.5.2) of Mac OS X on Fridays
.

I totally agree with this post 100%. I am looking into buying a MBP soon but haven't done so as yet because I am waiting for a really big update(design change?) before I make the plunge. I want a new notebook, but I know that it would be much wiser to get one at the beginning of a cycle. Also, I have a backup computer that is troublesome, but still works and I am willing to wait another year or more because I know it will be worth it in the long run.
So I suggest buy when you need it, and if you really want it, but can live without one for awhile, I recommend waiting for an update before buying. That is just my recommendation. -
Well, their quarterly earnings conference call starts at 5 PM EST. I suppose any product announcements would happen before that...

I recently bought a MBP (within the last week) and honestly I am the king when it comes to recommending waiting for the next big thing, but I was so pleasantly surprised by everything about this MBP that I am wondering now how much better can it get? And just as importantly, will the new model go through any hardware teething issues? And what about pricing?
I got this MBP discounted by $200 off an already good price so it's hard to give up on this deal, and even though I have another week before my return period ends I have a feeling that I'll be keeping this one.
I think what I'm getting at is that with most products the newer models are usually leaps ahead in every way, but when you have an already excellent and proven product, the wait and anticipation for the newer one doesn't seem as rewarding.
Maybe my expectations were too low that I was blown away by the MBP that it's just me that's having a tough time imaging a significant leap forward, while muddied with uncertainties and variables about the new model. -
Valid point ATC, but I don't know if you have tried out a MBP extensively(I have at my Aunt's place) and I really loved it, that is why I am so pumped out over a future model. The MBP is already so epic, I can't wait until they make it even better! That is my main reason with waiting so long. But I completely understand why a lot of people would buy now. I guess it is up to the buyer and his/her preference.
-
The most important thing Apple could update is not the processor power.
A GPU bump for the entry MBP to 256 MB model would be much appreciated.
The trackpad.
And also perhaps a bump up in the Resolution? It's nice now. But the current trend is going to push it up sooner or latter. -
Apple.com is closed.
Let see if it a MBP update -
It ended up with only a new PINK nano
-
Whether you buy an MBP now or after the refresh, it's still a GREAT machine. Like other posters have said, the updates are usually made in small increments, so if the machine has what you want today and you need it, just buy it. I have been waiting for the 17" refresh for 3 months now, and I guarantee that you, with MBP in-hand, are the happier camper!
-
The thing about the next refresh, is that it is only likely to bring a new processor and maybe the new trackpad. The processor in the current line is already much faster than 99% of us need, and the trackpad is a cool idea, but something I doubt I would actually wait for. Although I do find myself trying to treat my trackpad like my iPhone on occasion!
If it were me, and there was talk of new model in the next few weeks, I would probably hold off. If it seemed more than say 6 weeks or so, I would just get the current one. Buy when you need. -
Yeah its not like its going to be a quad core machine with revolutionary cpu speed. Just a small update thats maybe like 5% faster than the previous.
-
Yeah...really, the processors right now are more than enough to handle the tasks we do...even the Core Duos from two years
eek
ago. Software is what needs to catch up, our hardware is screaming good.

I'm not happy with the speed of Aperture on my machine. Seems to work okay for jpeg, but batch processing RAW is downright clunky. I am seriously considering switching to Lightroom and many people seem to have done the same.
I don't imagine the slight speedbump will make a huge difference but I am hoping that combined with a move from 2Gb to 4Gb RAM I might see some improvements
I vastly prefer the look and feel of Aperture over Lightroom but if it doesnt work well on the highest spec MBP ... c'mon
-
Adding the 8800m would be awesome..
-
I think the 8800m would not fit in the 15" chassis...would be nice if it could for sure.
-
Yeah, it would definitely be a challenge. I really, really like the look of the MBP, so a more powerful card would be fantastic. There's probably a better chance of the 8700m, I guess.
-
I hear the 8700m is no slouch either
-
on a side note...id kill for a mbp with 4 usb ports...
-
I'd like one with a multi-card reader as well.
-
I agree with the last 2 posts.
-
I think the reason for which a lot of people would be agitated is if they upgrade the VRAM of the 8600m in the entry-level MBP, if they bought it recently. There is a significant difference between the two, just not $500 worth for those people. Thus, the earlier adopters get a bit shafted if a new model comes out within a month or two instead of a year.
Of course, it's great for new customers, so ce que sera, sera.
MBP Update pushed several weeks
