I'm looking for some used MBP, and the guy advertising it is a little confused if it has a CORE DUO or CORE 2 DUO. All he knows is that it has an ATI X1600.
Is there a MBP with CORE DUO only? Is there a way to know this using the processor speed?
thanks.
-
if it has the x1600 im pretty sure it has a core 2 duo.
edit: nvm i just googled and i guess the core duo mbps had the x1600 as well.
Why doesn't he just look in system profiler on OS X? I think thats what it is called. -
Core Duo MBP = X1600
Core 2 Duo MBP = X1600
newest Core 2 Duo MBP = 8600GT -
He should be able to tell by simply going to the Apple menu and choosing About this Mac. It should say exactly what kind of processor it is (and if he still can't figure it out, clicking on "More Information" will tell exactly).
As a general point, if you're looking at used MBP's, I'd highly recommend looking at the C2D MBP's at least; they improved the ventiliation and cooling, so it performs cooler, and also allowed for a faster X1600 than the original MBP. -
The word is that the latest X1600 MBPs were a little faster in terms of clock speeds. The first ones were a little underclocked.
-
Hadn't heard that...interesting.
The Core Duo was the first MBP. They moved to the Core 2 Duo for the subsequent models, to answer the OP's question. -
It was actually a pretty dramatic difference - the original MBP's X1600 was really underclocked - like 310/300 or something. The C2D MBP had an X1600 clocked at like 418/450 (much closer to the 470/470 stock speeds of the X1600).
I think this was mainly due to the improved ventilation/etc. that made it not necessary to underclock it so much. -
The first Core Duo ones also ran a little hot, prolly part of the reason for the underclock. Maybe even the first Core2Duo ones were underclocked too.
The last ones, 2.16 and 2.33 were not as underclocked, if at all. -
Ok I found out the configs. Here are the options:
Core Duo 1.8MHz
1.5Gb RAM
80gb HD
X1600 128mb
(1 year of use)
or
Core 2 Duo 2.16Mhz
1Gb RAM
120Gb
x1600 128mb
(1 month of use, he said it's brand new, he almost never used)
The second option will cost me $500 more, do you guys think it's worth it? -
What are the total prices they are asking for each?
Honestly, again, just knowing the differences between the two, I'd always recommend the one with the improved cooling. But I'm curious how much they're asking for each. -
So, like $1000 and $1500?
For $1000, I'd get the first one.
That's a lot cheaper.
I have a 2.16 and it's very nice. It came with one 1GB stick from Apple, so you are only $65 stick of 1GB ram away from 2GB, which is solid. -
Well I'm not from USA so the prices will seem very high for you but anyways I'll just shoot:
First one -> $2.000,00
Second one -> $2.500,00
A new one withe Core 2 Duo 2Gb RAM 8600m Gt, 120gb HB would run me $3.500,00 -
Where you stay at? Australia/NewZealand? Dirty Souf Africa?
At that ratio, 2000/2500, the 2.16 looks better. -
Brazil, this **** is like hell the government taxes everything! And what you said about the 1gb being only one stick is great, I can just buy a new one in a couple months and I'll have 2gb!!!

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
hah why dont you just have someone from the states ship one to you?
honestly if you payed someone for their trouble, im sure they would have no problem buying you a laptop.
i mean, those prices are basically ridiculous anyway.
ah im upset. dont let sellers take advantage of you based on where you live. they should be selling their stuff at a reasonable price. -
The problem is that if someone ships it, it will be taxed in customs 50% of it's value.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
can't you just claim that the value is much lower than it really is?
like...
$50
or do bad things happen if you lie to the customs people?
you could probably slip another $50 to the customs agent if you had guts. -
I want to visit Brazil. I have a free ticket.
Hell, I'd sell you mine for $2000US... :shifty -
Yeah, honestly, given the relative price difference, I think I'd pay the extra amount for the C2D MBP, as it will run cooler - and if you ever plan on using the GPU (for games, etc.) the extra clock speed helps.
MBP question regarding CPU.
