I've been drooling at the Lenovo W-700....I just became aware of the new MBP 17"...does it make sense to get a new 17" MBP and dump all the software, and just go direct with Vista64? And will everything work?
That makes sense to me, as I have no interest in learning a new OS and programs, regardless of how easy/intuitive/better, and don't want to deal with dual OS on a machine. I don't want to bother porting over Lightroom and CS4 to Apple OS. CS4 doesn't run in 64 bit on Apple, currently, anyway...I have a few applications that are Windows only, and have NO INTEREST in adapting to a multiple OS environment.
So, having read quite a bit of the various threads here discussing all this (really! I don't need a bunch of thread links, thanks! I would just love to get a few quick, informed comments), my specific questions are:
Will the laptop function correctly, in the sense that there are dual video cards, w/ switching? Will power monitors operate correctly - and fan speed utilities/cpu throttling, will they function under a pure Windows environment? Are there direct equivalents for the various utilities a laptop features, in a different OS?
The new glossy screen is wider gamut, the battery life is stupendous (yes, I realize 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours are likely more realistic expections given typical use other than best possible low power config.) Primary use: photo editing machine while traveling, and secondary, business use (specialized CAD application).
The Lenovo W-700 is too big to use primarily as a travel machine, but the 17" MBP is only 1 1/2" wider than my 15.4" Compal Hel80, and slightly smaller in other dimensions while at the same weight - this is a no-brainer upgrade, to me at least...
This is really looking like the machine the W-700 SHOULD have been, at least to me and my needs....
The plan: buy a stock machine, bump the RAM up to 4/6/8 GB depending on immediate financial situation, probably just pull the stock HD and go w/ a new, clean 500GB, format and install Vista64 (using currently on desktop w/ no probs). -
. You will be on your own for every single device driver, Mac driver package for Windows is limited and as-is.
. The core chipset driver is for Mac machines, without OS X, you are pretty swimming on your own.
The above are the only fews I can see of hand personally. And yes, I used to have that fancy idea of installing Windows on my macBook- learned a hard way.

there are a number of issues with boot camp and i wouldn't recommend using the macbook pro with windows as your primary machine, especially if you're doing things that need the horsepower of something like a W700 or the 17" mbp. -

The IBM T500 would be a better solution and would be great for travel.

Excellent clarity on your answers, and I am disappointed to hear a concensus that it is a plan which won't really work.
Thanks, all.....
