    Hey all,
As per one of the other posts floating around at the moment, i recently purchased a brand new MBP.
I've come across a couple issues which aren't as big a deal, but the one that's really bugging me at the moment and as I type this is that at least while running vista, I'm getting a high-pitched whining sound. It's definitely not something that I can tolerate, and it is a must that I be able to dual-boot this system...

Can anyone offer some suggestions? It doesn't seem to be doing it while running OS-X (at least as far as I've noticed), and only happens when i switch over to running Vista. If i take it in to the Mac store tomorrow, is there anything they can actually do since it's only when I'm running an OS that's not theirs?

    Cheers!

do you a have a built-in microphone? if so, you could try disabling the mic. i doubt this is the answer or solution, but it's all i have for a suggestion. i haven't read "os dependent whine" so that kinda narrows it down to that as far as i know.

Try and see where the whining is comming from exactly. Is it your speakers???
To be fair, my laptop would be whining too if it had to run Vista. :p

    lol!
I was actually just about to revise my post to say that the noise is coming from the right side of the laptop up by where the power button is. I have the feeling that if that's where the HDD is located than that may be the culprit. I wonder if it's just because vista's trying to do some indexing or something. I'll try to take it in tomorrow and see, hopefully.

No doubt you need Vista to run particular Windows apps, but just on the off-chance that isn't so, you might want to delete Vista and try a Linux distro for the dual-boot.

I can't think of any reason why your machine would whine with one OS and not the other (ignoring the obvious joke which SSJ3Goku beat me in posting LOL). Could this be a driver issue (I think the mic or speaker suggestions probably are more likely)? Something for Vista needs an update?

Mine does the exact same thing and it seems to be coming from the same spot you described, although I'm only running OSX. It doesn't seem to affect performance or anything and I've had my laptop for about a month now. I've posted about this before but no one really seems to know what the cause of it is.

I don't have a macbook (yet! :p), but I do have the same problem.
Search yields many threads about this issue, and it seems to be related to the C3 power state of Intel cpu's. The OS can put the cpu in a lower power state (C3 or C4), which consumes less battery power.
Here's just one thread talking about this problem.
For me, I only have this issue when running vista AND using the battery only. In XP (with battery) or just on AC power (Vista or XP), I don't have this issue.
I thought it was mostly Vista related (because of it's more advanced power management features to that of XP), but it seems that some have it with vista, or as bcom77 said, in OSX, so I don't think it's OS related.
I know it's not much of a help, but that might help give you an idea of what causes it. :)

If you cant find the issue solution somewhere (dont know how common it is), then just try to eliminate your devices one by one. Can at least help to figure out what its not. Besides Vista.

hmmm, I'll try and eliminate devices one by one when I get back tonight. I had read after googling that when some people had this issue, it was a problem with the power management. For me it does it whether I'm plugged in or running on battery. If I can find the do CD for my desktop I'll try running do and see if it's got similar issues...
