Is it true that you can only get the native resolution of the external monitor while the lid of the MBP is closed?
The other thing is - how is the external monitor supposed to be setup... (i mean the powering up sequence) ... are u supposed to have the MBP in sleep mode and then proceed to attach the DVI cable and then switch on the external?
Last... the MBP has a DVI-I link/port (female)(I = integrated analog & digital). The monitor I'm hooking it up to has a DVI-D (digital only)link... also .. the connector I have is a male DVI-D to male DVI-D. Can I hook this to my MBP? Any issues?

    Not true.

Wake up the Mac after connecting the external without opening the lid using external input devices.

    You'll be fine.

Just keep in mind that if you intend to game on your unibody mbp, you'll more than likely need to open the lid. I've experimented several times and thermal temps are much better controlled with the lid open.

I just leave my lid open. If I am gaming, I usually put in the Task Manager or the walkthrough in the MBP's monitor. If it really bothers me, then I just turn the brightness to 0 and I'm done... =)
