Hi, I have an Ibook G4 laptop. I was wanting to hook up an external monitor to it, but was concerned about compatibility. I am pretty sure the G4 only has a VGA adapter (not DVI), and I was wondering if it would still be compatible with most monitors? Also, the resolution of the screen of the G4 is only 1024 by 768. Will this affect how it looks on the monitor? Will the screen be cut-off on an external monitor, or would it look fine? Thanks so much for your help.

The ibook g4 should be able to output higher resolution than the laptop's actual display. So on an external, you might even get more. There also shouldn't be any compatability issues either. Just standard output.

by programming default, ibooks are only allowed to mirror on an external monitor, which then is limited by the internals display res.
if you want to expand the desktop on to the external, you need to download the hack to enable it. then you can choose higher resolutions on the external resolution.
i have used the hack on my ibook with no ill effects. i have noticed, and it is a warning, that in some cases, depending on what you are doing, can cause excess heating. -
There's some good info on configuring display spanning discussed here, including the hack Radcom mentioned above. You can either enter the hack by hand (if you're brave
) or use the supplied Applescript available from the same page.
