My MacBook is 6-days old and running XP Pro via Bootcamp.
When I insert a blank CD-R disc, the drive whines, growls, and clunks for a while and then spits out the disc. The discs are high quality. I've tried several of them.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Based on the terrible noises the drive makes, I am leaning towards hardware failure as the cause.
Thanks!

Hmm... I'm recalling somewhere in the filing cabinet of my mind something about Win/Parallels having difficulty running the CD/DVD *burner* - something about drivers or something. Like Win running under Parallels needs additional drivers to run the Macbook hardware or something similar?
Maybe googling will yield some answers. Good luck. I hope to never have to run windows under the Mac.
Is is possible to do what you need in windows, create the files, then switch to Mac OS to locate/burn the files you need? It's annoying to use a work-around, but maybe will be a temporary fix? -
Version 2.5.3186 of parallels supports CD/DVD burning and playing, so if you're using the latest version and not the BETA version, you should be good unless there's a hardware defect or the CD's are bad. I have noticed that my drive is a bit more sensitive on my MBP and I give those CDR's to my husband.

I finally got time away from work to do some more testing....
Yes, it does in on both OSX and Windows.
The situation is a little better than I first thought - it only spits them out about 1/2 time on both OSX and Windows. That still seems too high a failure rate to me for a brand new unit. -
Hrm, sounds like you have a bad drive. I'd call apple up.
I'm still thinking of having mine replaced. It wouldn't eject a disc one time. Took me like, 30 minutes to get it out. It was half way stuck in there :-/ -
I brought the macbook in to see a genius today - it spit out a few cds and made unhappy noises while he watched. The discs worked fine in the drives of the other macbooks in the store, so ours is getting the drive replaced.
Our 'switcher' journey is off to a rocky start - major surgery at only 13 days old :-( -
