MacBook 13" OS X 10.6.8 : importing some CDs to iTunes and the process is going much, much slower than it has previously; any thoughts -- should I replace the reader? Thanks!

MacBooks aren't known for having the fastest optical drives, but if performance is slower than before, it's entirely possible the laser is dirty or failing. Maybe try blowing some compressed air into the slot. If that doesn't work, it would probably be more cost and time effective to purchase an external drive. It doesn't have to be the Apple SuperDrive either, I've used a generic Asus one that cost $15 on my MacBook Pro without issue.
