Yeah, I didn't think about the power issue. Though, still it's a great feature to have. It's harder and harder to find a 2.5" sata drive enclosure that is firewire. Actually, I can't find any on newegg! And I'd rather never, ever, ever use a usb2 enclosure lol. I'd put up with having to plug it in, or even plugging it into usb for power.

OMG, I agree SO much. I think this is why I, and others, have been so harsh when talking about it. We really wanted something... of a 12" PB replacement, not this thing.

Or as useful as any windows xp/especially vista for that matter. The reason why firewire is so useless is because your using a pc and that windows does not know how to utilize it the correct way~ I remember using firewire on a pc, wow its so sloow to transfer files. But on a mac I can transfer firewire 400/800, (400 2.1x faster than usb 2.0 and 800 2x faster than that of the 400). I think firewire is godsend since I transfer files regularly over 100gb. Usb would take FOREVER to transfer files of that magnitude. Even just 8gb is a pain in the ass with usb.

But for ideally and realistically for a ultraportable and with no optical drive built in, I think it would be a MUST and hugely favored to have at least a firewire 400 port on the MBA. If the MBA had one built in, you can probably just load 4gb-30gb worth of movies in there MUCH quicker than any usb 2.0 driven external harddrives.

That "thing" might well signify Apple's new vision for their computer line----that is, they will gradually transform the Mac line into iTunes-Store-Terminals.

The iPodicifation of the Macintosh is already under way. When the process is complete, the two product lines will unite.

Apple modified the 1984 commercial a couple of years ago, to have the girl running with a hammer sport an iPod----that commercial is just another silly variation on Orwell's masterpiece, nothing important.

It's interesting to note, however, that according to Apple's real "vision", that silly variation works the other way around: Those staring into the great telescreen are future iPodPC users, and "Big Brother" is none other than Steve Jobs on the iTunes Store screen.

Sorry to keep quoting you lol but you make it so obvious to make a comment on you. If I had the option for the firewire or usb (if even both is there), I would hands down take that firewire. Firewire is NOT slowly becoming obsolete when it is so much faster than usb 2.0. Obviously you have never used firewire before and if you did it was on a pc/windows. I'm sorry for talking *hit about windows 3.1/95/98/2000/me/tablet/xp/vista or whichever, I've been a windows user since day 1 from windows dos to 3.1 era all the way to xp, but it took me 20 years to realize that windows is just horrible.

Only good thing to come from windows is gaming since most of the gaming market has been in the pc side. I know you made a comment earlier about windows owning most of the market but that soon will change my friend (especially when macs can load windows/linux/and the godly osx) nowadays. 95% of the time I use osx for EVERYTHING else and dual boot via bootcamp to windows xp to play a game for an hour or so on my mac pro.

Only when usb 3.0 and if its promised transfer rate is real world rate (which the usb 2.0 is not), then the firewire MIGHT start to become obsolete, which is in 2010.

FireWire has always the same speed on a PC and on a Mac as well. I use FireWire for years and the speed just depends on the chipset and the drivers, it has nothing to do with Windows.

I hate to break this too you, but buying Windows for a Mac is still inscreasing Windows market share, and Mac OS X will *NEVER* let me repeat.... NEVER EVER gain more market share any time soon, or at all unless Apple liscences their OS like Microsoft has, which I doubt they ever will.

Personally, I don't expect Mac OS X to ever overtake Windows. I could see it growing a lot more, but not to the dominant position. Linux is possible, if they get the word out and make it easier to use. And I don't really have a problem with Mac OS X staying a minority either...there's a lot of things that being a minority brings, or more importantly, doesn't bring...such as there's not as much, if any at the moment, virus attacks on Mac OS X, etc.

I am with you on that  cuase hardware is definately an issue when dealing with transfers speeds.......

this WiKi should also help with those who are under the false assumption that FireWire is Da King

The MBA is an iTunes Store Terminal.
