MacBook Pro 15 mid-2017 thermal throttling

Have read a few posts here and there that say that the MBP 15 2017thermally throttles under load. How bad is the throttling (clock speeds and temperatures would be appreciated), and would it occur under heavy web browsing or light audio encoding?

Also, is the Surface Book 2 15" better? I have heard that it throttles as well, though to what extent I'm not sure. Thanks.

It's not that it thermally throttles (had a 2016) it's that it has a very low power limit and so when the GPU and CPU are both active it is likely to POWER throttle down the clock speed. Heat issues were more prevalent in the previous generation and not this one.

 

It does thermal throttle. 97C into 2ghzish.

 

It should settle around 2.4GHz with thermals around 90*C - it's not terrible but not good either. As for the Surface Book 2 - I have no real information on thermals for it.

Is 97C the sustained temperature? If so, how would that affect my use pattern?

Would that cause lag and a poor user experience for my use case?

It will basicially break outside your warranty at some point. It's designed this way by apple to get as much money as possible from their customers. You can look on youtube after a guy named "luis rossman". He makes repair videos on Macbooks and explains how they are designed to die and what worthless garbage they are.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself an Asus Zenbook. They look like Macbooks, have different color, last very very long on battery, are as slim and have actual processing power.

This, more or less. The only thing I'd like to add is that it depends on which MacBook generation we are talking about. As Louis has said, the 2010-2011 models were horrible but the 2013-2014 models were solid so it all depends on how the innards are designed.
