I have a new MacBook Pro 13" 2.66GHz.
I have seen adaptors that allow me to output via HDMI.
Obviously HDMI carries audio as well as video - but will my MacBook output both audio and video through the mini display port?
-
only the 2010 MacBook Pro line will allow for audio over mini display port.
older models (any model released before the April 2010 refresh) will not do audio over display port. if you have an older MacBook Pro, you will need to use other means to get sound off of your MBP. options do exist. just not quite as convenient. -
I purchased my MacBook Pro 13 only a week or so ago - I have the new 2.66GHz model which is currently up on the Apple Website/Store - I guess that means I have the 2010 model?
This is the one I have - the 13" 2.66....

yes, you do.
your computer will support audio through the mini display port.
-
Excellent - now to look for an adaptor!
I dont suppose there is an adaptor with both VGA and HDMI on the same adaptor, so you can use either?
If not I'll need both - just in case I need to connect to a VGA screen at some point (with a seperate audio cable!)
Thanks. -
no, there aren't any "all in 1" adapters.
I'd recommend:
oops. does not support audio.
might want to make sure they ship to the UK. I'm not 100% sure. Best prices on the net. If they don't ship to your location, check eBay. there are always good prices to be had there from reputable sellers. -
Cheers mate
-
+1 for monoprice.com. But yeah...check on shipping to the UK
Also (at least here in the US), the official Apple MDP to VGA is only $30, so the monoprice adapter plus shipping really isn't all that much cheaper.
I wish my 2009 13" MBP did the audio through the MDP. I still keep my Dell XPS M1330 around just because it's such a PITA hooking my MBP to my HDTV with the stupid USB audio+MDP to HDMI adapter. -
you'd still save almost $10 by buying the monoprice adapter.
$21.53 first-class shipping. Apple's would be $30+tax. you're saving 33.3%, sir. I'll take it all day long. -
Monoprice Mini DP to HDMI adapter does NOT support audio... they even say it on their page... you do NOT want to get the Monoprice one if you want both audio and video. I haven't looked for the best one that does support it yet, but just make sure the one you buy says it works...
-
Oops.
apologies. I stand corrected. I thought it was purely a Mac hardware issue. I had no idea it was a cable issue too. I surely would have bought this cable (and subsequently sent it back). I'm sure Monoprice will have an option that supports audio soon. I feel bad now. -
you should feel bad! What were you thinking?!?!?!?
no... come on... no one knows everything, thats why its good to get input from many sources. Theres plenty of posts and youtube videos of people getting audio to work and what cables they have used. Most Mini-DP to HDMI adapters that have audio apparently work... just not all of them, and not Monoprice for sure. -
Thanks for pointing that out.
This adaptor now adds to by list of products to get! (Time Capsule, Magic Mouse, adaptor.....)
The list keeps growing! -
Does it support 5.1 DTS or DTS-HD?
-
It is presently very hard to find a Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter that will transmit sound form the new mackbooks. The only confirmed one I can find is from Griffin - Griffin Technology: Video Display Converter - Convert Mini DisplayPort output to HDMI or DVI video
-
I'll check that one out. Thanks!
-
I have found one other one, and while I have not used it myself it is stated to support Audio on the website.
It seems that a few vendors have been authorized by Apple to sell Mini Displayport to HDMI adapters that DO pass audio as well as video signals, here is one made by SendStation for $22...
SendStation - Products - Mini DisplayPort Adapter
It says on that page that "All SendStation Mini DisplayPort Adapters are built under license from Apple" and that the HDMI adapter supports digital audio if it is supplied though the MDP connector and then it says "currently not on any Mac model" which is incorrect they just need to update their website and have not done so since the 2010 MBP update.
That is the one I would get if I have a newer MBP that supported Audio, I did find some cheapish no name one that claimed to support audio as well for $8 but it certainly was not built under license from Apple. I wonder why Apple doesn't release their own adapter? Doesn't make any sense as they could be making a ton of money off it, I believe I heard a tech at the Apple store say they were coming out with one soon, which would make sense as they prob wanted to wait and release one that supports audio to not further people off who had already bought their "video only adapter".
