Does anyone know if the MacBook Pro will be available with the Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX in the near future?
-
It is unknown at this time.
I think the consensus is that the form factor cannot handle the heat output of the 8800 GTX. Unless it was exclusive to the 17". -
I *think* that the 9600M GT may be better as is it not on a smaller die and about equivalent to a 8800M GT ?? Maybe a ATI HD3870 or ATI HD3870x2 will make it in there as it is on a smaller die and *should* run cooler. Again all this is just speculation. God Bless

Not before a redesign.
It's not like a Macbook Pro is a cool laptop to begin with. -
I'm hoping for it, but yeah the form factor may not allow it. But I hope
-
It'll blow up first
.
But yeah...hard to say. I wouldn't expect it at this point though. I do like the ATI Radeon HD3870. -
I think something outputting ~50 watts in 3/8" of space = nuclear meltdown, besides I like the 4+ hours of battery life this thing gives me a lot more than I like to brag about 3dmark scores.
-
The ati stuff I have been saying that for the past few months now, crank down the die sizes then you can fit things in there. I like the Idea of the HD 3850x2 AMD need all the help they can get.
-
So then 8800m GT = 9600m GT?
That would be a considerable boost from 8600m GT, right?
And with a new design, I'd love to have it in a Macbook Pro, even 17"

9700M GT or 9750M GT= 8800M GT. The 9600M GT=8700M GT and the 9650M GT= 8800M GTS.
-
the 8800 series is designed for enthusiast gamer consumer.. this is not the target market for the mbp. i dont think there will ever be a macbook pro with the most powerful gpu on the market.
reason:
-heat (even on the 17"... unless they want to make it significantly thicker)
-power consumption
-cost
-lack of application (games/software/what not)
really? 9600 is = to 8800gt?!? you do realise that the naming "GTS" is more powerful than the "GT" right?
also note that the GPU in the 15" MBP is underclocked. -
If I'm remembering correctly, the 8600M was the most powerful notebook GPU at the time the Santa Rosa MBP's were released. However, like you, I doubt that we're going to be seeing 8800Ms in MBPs.
-
I do not want the 8800Gt my self it is over kill! What i want is one of the new Ati cards with the the 3850 X2. Also I would like to see some kind of a dedicated GPU on the Macbook, they need to spread the difference between the Macbook air and Macbook.
-
Has any mac ever had high end gpu for notebooks?

Well the PowerBooks had the Mobility Radeon 9700, but that probably doesn't count since the MR 9700 was really an overclocked MR 9600 that held out until the MR 9800 was released, which Apple never used.
But, yeah, the chance of Apple including a 9800M series GPU in the MacBook Pro is close to zero. There simply isn't the thermal room or battery life for it, and it would add too much to the cost of the notebook. Personally, I'm hoping that Apple uses the 9700M GTS which uses the G94 core just like the 9800M series, but presumably uses less power given it's lower performance. Although, more likely than not Apple is going to use one of ATI's GPUs next since the reports are that ATI scored a large number of design wins over nVidia for upcoming Montevina based notebooks. As always, if you want to see something from Apple, you can always fill out their feedback forms. I'm not sure how effective they are, but at least it feel's like you are doing something.

The 7950GTX was the most powerful notebook GPU at the time. It was dethroned when 8800M came along.
0% chance that the 8800M will be in a mbp.
If anything it will be 9600M GT
Maybe an ATI card if it offers better battery life and less heat. -
Apple never has or will use a high end video card, simply because few games that run on the OS X can use all that power, and using that card would make the price of the laptop more expensive and over priced than it already is.
LOL what are you talking about. A line of cards always use the same die space. The reason a more powerful card needs a larger computer is because of heat dissapation and the additions such as memory and bridge. 9600M GT is no where near as powerful as the 8800M GT. -
Macs are far too elegant for such a barbaric video chip as an 8800M GTX.
I have one in my Sager 5793, this laptop is the loudest thing in my room. The cooling solution is also massive and accounts for a good amount of the laptop's weight. My 17" Macbook Pro by comparison is tiny and virtually silent.
It does depress me that they use the 8600GT though. I guess it's because the chip simply isn't very hot, but I would have loved to see a 7900GS option, since even *that* 'low-end' enthusiast chip is faster overall than an 8600GT. -
it is simple, buy 2 laptops

fwiw, the 8600m gt is faster than the 7900 gs in new games. the 7900gs also runs hotter and sucks down more power. there is really no reason to get a 7900 gs in your macbook pro today.
-
Careful with the use of never
, because who knows, ten years from now?
But yeah, Apple hasn't put in any high end graphics cards into its notebooks. That may change in the future, who knows? -

The 8600M GT is especially crippled by the 128-bit memory bus. It's other stats are not particularly exciting either. In the PC world the 8600GT is considered a joke desktop card, and they only get them in laptops begrudgingly. -

Maybe when we see that MacBook Pro redesign we've been waiting for for around a year or two, Apple will introduce a better cooling system so it can support higher-end, truly professional video cards in the MBP. When we get a MB re-design, it'd be smart for Apple to finally support a mid-range video card in the MB so it's more competitive with other 13" notebooks, since they've already introduced the MBA to be their ultraportable "integrated" product.
-
I could see the MacBook Air being the one with the least powerful specs, as you said, the MacBook adopting some elements of the MacBook Air (sloped casing) and having mid-range dedicated graphics, MacBook Pro keeping its current graphics category, and possible introduction of a higher end Mac notebook.
-
So is it very likely that the MBP will get an upgrade to its video card later this year with the Montevina update(not necessarily meaning the upgrade will be to the 8800M GTX)?
MacBook Pro with GeForce 8800M GTX?
