Will there ever be such a thing or are fully functional tablets not popular enough?

Not in Apples future, however, if you saw the new Windows Surface demo recently, it might not be a bad choice.

The correct answer is that we have no idea. -
It's what they built the iPad for, to keep people off their backs about a computer/tablet hybrid. Keep dreaming.

I'm not waiting for a convertible, I'm just saying we have no idea what their future holds (unless you attend their board room meetings and you have all of the influence necessary to direct their future product lines) -
Considering that Apple explicitly pooh-poohed convertible tablets as the equivalent of bolting a toaster oven to a refrigerator, I suspect they'll hold off for another couple years at least. But I think that's where the market is going (note how both OSX Lion and Win 8 adopt tablet-style features), so eventually I think they'll come around. But not for a couple years at least.

oh yeah, probably not the near future...

There used to be a third party that made a mac that you owned into a tablet... I forget the name of the company though.

Modbook.. they are still in business, but I don't think they make any modbooks anymore.

They do sell a base for the Ipad that makes it something like a hybrid. Brydge Keyboard Dock Turns iPads into MacBook Airs $210 with speakers. Looks good, but your convertible is still just an Ipad.
