Hi. I will be teaching in China with my MacBook with OS X. What do I need to enable me to use Chinese electricity? Do I need to know anything special to hook up to the internet at a university or an internet cafe? I will be in & near Beijing.
Thank you for your help!![]()

Nothing special. You'll just need an adapter. You can usually get a set that covers all the world's sockets for under $10. Just do a google search for travel adapters and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about. Enjoy Beijing...I was there a few years ago...crazy place.

Hey there, I live and go to school (international) in Beijing. We use Macs primarily and NgCir is right it's just a different plug at the end. I think it's the same one as Australia uses...

Thank you so much for you help & your quick replies!

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
You might want to invest in a portable surge protector as well -- Chinese power grid can sometimes be more prone to voltage spikes that will burn through your power brick into the notebook.
All you need is the plug, not the travel voltage converter (I went overseas to China twice in last 5 years to adopt my daughters). -
ClearSkies makes a good point. You'll always want to use a surge protector just in case although I haven't had any problems in my 6 years here

Yeah I never had any problem with power surge either. But best to be safe than sorry.
Also try to get one of the those universal ones that include the heavy duty prongs. Very useful in airports. Especially useful in Hong Kong International

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
you can get an adapter + surge protector that isn't much larger than just the adapter.
the surge protector is probably a good idea for travel anywhere in the world. -
I've been living in Mongolia (next to China) for the past three years, with frequent trips to China. You can pick up simple but effective adapters in China very cheap (about a dollar). Also, local power bars typically accept every size and shape of electrical prongs. By the way, I've never experienced any power surges in my time here.

Yup, just an adapter and you're good to go. I've used my macbook around the world without a surge protector and its fine.
