Hi guys,
Lots of silicone MacBook keyboard (and many also have wrist pad) protectors out there now including quite a few models on eBay.
Anyone used these?
- Will they insulate heat so I set my MacBook and house on fire?
- Do they feel good when typing?
- Can I close the MacBook with the protector in place without messing up my glossy screen or do I have to take it off each time?
Advice/suggestions much appreciated!
-
can you link to one of these? I am curious myself. As for heat, I sense no heat whatsoever in the upper part of the macbook, no matter how hot it is running (excepting the upper left corner just above the magsafe connector) so I would't be concerned with that as long as it doesn't cover the vents.

Never seen them -
I have seen one of them, there is a popular company that makes them for the Powerbooks (they have MBP out now, and Macbook is in the stages) They reported with their product there is nothing such as keeping the heat within, they did however admit (gotta love honesty) that having such a thing especially for a Macbook and its keyboard design that the protection can feel weird.

Here are a few links:
eBay one:

iSkin - doesn't protect the trackpad area however:

Macessity one - similar to eBay:

Might head off to the local Apple store to see if they have these for a try - worried about this whole staining the trackpad/write rest area on a white Macbook.
I guess another alternative is the Invisible Shield system but I've heard that the large piece on the base is tough to get on... http://www.shieldzone.com/item_description/APPMCBF.html
It's also rather expensive for adhesive plastic and doesn't protect the keyboard itself... -
I have had my Macbook for about 2 months now and my keys have yet to show any sign of staining at all.
However, my palm rest and trackpad area is showing staining, but I also have the InvisibleShield and only the shield is affected by it, not sure what there is exactly that I could use to clean it yet, maybe an email to the manfacturer about it. Anyways checking under the shield everything is still white as the day I got it. -
The question is :
Is it cleanable the staining even after a year? Or will it become a form of wear and tear type problem due to the whitish color. I am a clean freak and i have no problemo with the alcohol and Q-tips next to me at all times. I just don't like the word "stain" compared to the word "dirty" because you can clean "dirty" but many times you can not clean a "stain".
Please i need these answers i don't care i will dish out the additional dough for the black for peace of mind. I am sold on Apple i just need to make a right decision regarding this 'staining' issue
thanks -
You're correct I shouldn't have used the word stain.
You can remove it, iKlear is the cleaning solution to every dirty issue Apples product gets, there are a number of different products they have.
I have also read that Mr. Clean Erase pads work wonders as well. -
Thanks for clarifying that. -
I bought the iSkin for my MBP from the Apple website and i am not very keen on it and as a result i barely ever use it. I don't really like the feel of it when typing. It also a bit thick for my liking. I don't that it looks to great either.
I have never experienced any heat issues with it though and i would not shut my lid with it in place for fear that it may cause an imprint on the screen. -
Thats the common response that I hear from many keyboard protectors, it ends up causing the whole typing situation to feel weird, and you end up thinking the keyboard isn't very tactile or anything.
I think the keys are a bit more resistant to getting dirty than the overall case. -
rachuk:
Can you close the MBP with the silicone keyboard cover inside without the silicone sticking up enough to mess up the screen? -
Archimago yes it is possible to close my lid with the protective cover in place.
If you want to buy this and shut your lid with it in place i would recommend using the protective film that Apple provided in your MacBook box when you bought it. That is perfect to use for protecting your keyboard for when it is not in use and when you want to shut it with some kind of protective cover in place.
MacBook keyboard silicone protectors... Anyone used one?
