Hey guys. I'm scanning the Web for a new Notebook.
I came across Apple's range of Macbooks. (Not Pros, they're to expensive.)
The Macbook White caught my attention. Around the price I'm aiming around, and I've also been wanting to get my hands on a Macbook just to try it out, and hopefully step into the light, converting from the DARK SIDE that is Windows.![]()
All I'm pretty much going to be doing on this laptop is playing World of Warcraft, maybe some higher specced games, and generally using the features. Internet Browsing, and iLife if I actually do end up getting a Macbook.
Could anyone convince me to buy this? Its specs are low and its price is high, but this has to be for a reason, right?
-
are you a student?
-
No such thing as the DARK SIDE.
I have the white macbook, and it's a nice notebook. It gets very good performance too for integrated graphics (nvidia 9400m). It supports only 4GB RAM so your more limited with future-proofing than with the Macbook Pro, but it's still a good machine.
To be honest, if you can afford another $200 (if you're buying in the US), I'd just go for the 13" base Macbook Pro. It supports 8GB RAM, and is aluminum.
-
I am a Student, yes. And I'm buying in the UK. The base Macbook pro is £150 more, which is a fair bit. Don't think I can afford that.
-
The white macbook is a nice machine! I'm quite happy with it.
-
Do you play any games on it? If so, which and how well do they run? What frame rates do you get?
-
You will get educational discount and free iPod, which you can resale for the difference!
-
The Discount is only for School staff or whatever. I even used the online chat thing with an Apple representative, and they told me. Although, it doesn't say that anywhere on the thing, infact it says the opposite.
Also, HOW DO I GET A FREE iPOD! YES PLEASE GIMME GIMME! -
Oh.. NICE!
But still, the education discount is only for lecturers/teachers etc, not students. Even though it says that, apparantly its stated in the Terms and Conditions somewhere. -
But anyway, how well do you think this would run World of Warcraft in a crowded area? Say in a 25 man raid or something.
-
Nope
It is for students -
Erm.. I'm not 18.. My brother is 19 though.. and in University.
Could I get him to buy it with my money? Would it make any differences to the product depending who buys it? -
nope, he can buy and give it to you. No problems since warranty is tied to notebook, not person who bought it
-
I play just older games. The newest game I have is Medieval 2: Total War (2006), and I can play with everything on Medium, with heavy battles.
-
Like the others have told you, the white MacBook is really a very great value notebook. You should not have any problems doing what you've described. Good luck.
-
If I get it upgraded to 4GB ram, rather than 2GB, will it be a massive difference?
I mean, this costs alot more. Would the Macbook work just fine and perfect without the 2GB extra RAM? -
2GB RAM is plenty enough for your uses IMO. If you're really tight with cash at the moment, I'll suggest waiting till you've some extra dollars to spare before upgrading to 4GB RAM. Good luck.
-
Is it worth it though?
Should I just save my money and play World of Warcraft on and generally use a 2GB model? -
I have the early 2009 revision of the white MacBook and it is awesome. In WoW, I normally don't get framerates lower than 35-40 in uber-croweded areas. Gaming performance is decent, provided you aren't trying to run something like Crysis in Windows. The only modification that I have done to my MacBook is changing the hard drive from the stock 120GB to a 250GB one. It's definately a good machine.
-
Really? Wonder what i'm doing wrong. I too have the 2009 White Macbook w/9400m. It's been upgraded to 320gig hardrive and 4gig of ram. When I play WoW I am fine in first part of game. Burning Crusade a little slow at time. But Lich King oftens brings my machine to its knees with the frame rates dipping down into the 8-14 sometimes even lower
-
why not invest in a refurbished unibody model. I believe it was the late 08 model. I dont really know if they offer it in the US store but they do in the Canadian store and its pricing is on par with the white macbook
-
Hey Guys.
I'm probably getting the Macbook Pro 13 inch, 2.26ghz model.
Does anyone own this model? If so, what do you think of it? If you play WoW, what kind of perfomance (FPS) do you get?
How does it run with the stock 2GB RAM?
Thanks. -
on my mbp 2.4ghz with the 9400m I usually get around 60fps mostly, but inside cities etc it varies between 15-35fps, its really playable with the 9400m and I play on a higher resolution than the one possible on the macbook since I'm playing it on the 15" mbp screen, so it should bode well for your intended uses I hope. Good luck!
-
again, when are you getting it?
-
If I were serious about any gaming I'd upgrade to 4GB of ram. 2GB is fine for OSX, though, but 4 GB never hurts.

What's the deal with the batteries on the Macbook? I head you cannot replace them.
-
they are not made to be easy pop out and pop in, they saved space by not making all the mechanisms that go along with that and used the extra space for more battery.
You can change them out if they are physically bad however, it just takes a screw driver and removing the bottom cover of the laptop. -
you can replace them but you have to disassemble the machine some to do it. The batteries are no longer quickly removable and replacable
-
Thanks very much for clearing that up guys
EDIT:
Rep to both of you. -
I wouldn't get the white macbook, only the aluminum version. For $1000, with questionable build quality, 2 gigs ram, I'd recommend at least looking at other brands. Hp has some great laptops for 800-1000, so does lenovo. Vaios will cost a little more but are beautiful and for $1100 you can get a 1080p screen. Its just that compared to the uni bodies the white macbook just looks cheap. I'd highly recommend getting the "pro"s, and there are a lot of other great options right in that $1000 price range.
-
IMHO, Apple did this to prevent people from using 3rd party branded batteries.
-
Apple is a control freak.
Macbook.
