Amazon is selling OLDER (2011) models of macbook air for much less. I asked previous buyers if those are unused/out of the box Macbooks that weren't sold in 2011. I did not get a clear answer. My main interest is longevity (computer longevity) and lightness/battery life. I only use it for internet/ youtube, netflix, sometimes video or muSIC. anyone with experience buying older/ used models of mac?

Macbook airs are already underpowered. They will not last very long surfing the internet and such with the advent of 4K video and more complicated web technology. Always get the newest hardware you can afford.

I doubt the Amazon MBAs are new. You might want to hit the clearance section on Apple's website where it looks like you can get the new MBA refurbed at a 15-20% discount depending on the model and you'll get the full warranty. Any Mac or PC will drain the battery more quickly when you're hitting the CPU hard, which heavy flash sites like YouTube will do.

I have a mid 2011 i5 Macbook Air (11") and the logic board fried itself - getting a new one without spending a fortune was tricky to say the least. I ended up striking lucky and found a replacement board for not too much. I consider this a caveat in regards to longetivity but I may have simply been unlucky.

Function wise it's still pretty good for most usage I throw at it while travelling - the 2GB RAM works ok (Soldered, non replaceable) for light use but it uses the SSD as a paging file a lot. I noticed a massive improvement when I switched to the new logic board that has 4GB of RAM but 2GB would be ok for light web and office shizzle. Battery life is still really good and the small size and light weight means I take it with me while travelling.

Most of the time, if you buy a MacBook Air or Pro, buy a new one with all the Applecare they will sell you. If it saves you the cost of one repair, you are ahead.

And buy that AppleCare, if it saves you one motherboard replacement, it is cheap insurance. Apple refurbs are good, and with normal Apple warranty policies.

So that things aren't too confusing, I've removed some stealthy spam posts, but left replies since they are good advice. I'm also locking the thread to avoid further spam, leo, if you want it reopened at some point, you can just ask any Apple mods or super mods to do it for you.
