I was about to pull the trigger on a Macbook Air however I was wondering if only the super drive will work with it or if I am able to buy a cheaper not apple brand one.

On a side note, I am new to OSX and is there any word program I could use to take notes in class before I bought a superdrive for Mac Office?

I think any external USB drive should work but I'm not positive as I don't have the Air.

OSX has a built-in text editor so you can use that to take notes if you wish or you could use the 30day trial of iWork. Having owned both iWork and Office 2008 I personally prefer iWork now and so does my wife and she's a long time office user.

TextEdit is very nice for a built in text editor, it can even open and create MS Word formats.... its not quite as good as a full Word or Pages or Writer, but its good for basic usage.

For free Office, you can download OpenOffice, or NeoOffice (OpenOffice based, but focused on making it nice for Macs)... they can be quite good too.
