I'm thinking about buying a new macbook aluminum and I'm trying to price everything before I do.
I called the Apple store in my area and they want $200 for the 4gb of ram and they keep the original 2gb that comes with it. I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere and I'm not afraid to install it myself.
Where can I get 4gb of ram that is compatible with this model?
Also, do you recommend buying the apple care for $260 or just going with the warranty that comes with it and getting apple care later?
Thank you,
Potential first time mac user.

Intel Mac's don't necessarily need Apple memory in them.......I ran my Black MacBook with one "certified" Apple 2gb memory stick and one NON-certified 2gb stick without any problems. As long as you buy DDR3 memory, you shouldn't have a problem.

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
2x2GB of DDR3 (PC3 8500) will run you $125-160 @ NewEgg. Probably isn't much of a secondary market to sell your 2x1GB since few notebook models support DDR3 at the moment.
You can add AppleCare at any time up until the last day of your initial 1yr warranty. Only difference from stock is that you won't get free phone support from months 4-12 if you skip AppleCare. You can get AppleCare for the MacBook @ Ebay for around $150-$175 shipped. -
Try OWC, they have a 4gb kit for $115.

Look at Newegg, as they might have some holiday deals for us Mac users.

I'd be cautious with 3rd party memory. A lot of it is junk and could cause system problems. Only use reliable memory from Crucial or Kingston, etc. If you're afraid to install it then just get Apple to do it for $200. Kingston ram would run you more than that, and crucial will run you about $150. Also, if you're a first time Mac buyer you need to know that you likely will not need 4 gbs of ram. Macs work well on far less ram than most PCs. In terms of the Apple Care: Buy it within the first year, even if something goes wrong with the machine. Personally I think extended warranties are a huge rippoff if you look at the numbers. This is where they make most of their money. It's 1/4 of the price of the machine! So, save on the warranty and just get them to put the memory in unless you know someone competent to help you.

It costs $200 dollars to install memory. Jeeeez, I could make a killing. I charge like $20 bucks if anything for the labour that goes into that.

Be extremely careful with 3rd party memory on this notebook, even with reputable brands like Kingston and Crucial.
Take a look at these threads on Apple's forums.

I'm in the market for 2x2GB of ram right now myself, but I'm reconsidering waiting a month or two while the dust settles. -
Macbook memory from Crucial
Mushkin memory for Macbook at Newegg
Both seem to be around $125 for 4GB. -
be very careful when choosing RAM for the new MB/P,
I bought 4 gig replacement from a authorized reseller here in Hong Kong, and well it would make your MB/P freeze. mouse will not move, keyboard will not move screen frozen the only way to fix it was cold reboot.
This would happen randomly and frequently, very annoying, would even crash during reformat
Changing the RAM back to original fixed the problem though

I just bought crucial yesterday 4gb dd3 cost me $200 after shipping tax and conversion rate, if you live in the states you'll probably be able to get it under $150.
And yeah there won't be much of a market for resale, Since there only 1 gb sticks anyone that has a note book with DDR3 will already have 1gb sticks at least, so there's really no market for them. -
That's not a bad price for 4gb. I was thinking around $180 USD at my local Best Buy.
