    That sound you described is ominous. I had a similar sound once on an old notebook and it turned out that the HD died. I lost everything on it and nothing I could do about it.

    But since your diagnostic is showing all OK then I'm not sure now.

    Also, I would guess that since you didn't actually go through with the reinstall of the OS the HD content should still be there. Only a guess here though.
