I recently bought a 2.16GHz Macbook, and installed boot camp with windows xp on it. When I try to run Counter Strike: Source, or Half-Life 2, the main menu is a blackscreen, although the buttons still make sounds when i hover over them. I somehow managed to make it into a garys mod single player game through the black screen, and in game seems to work ok.
Is there any way to fix the black screen menu problems with the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics?
I've heard some people talk about this before, so people might know.

I think Both requieres DX7 hardware lightning transformation, something the Intel GMA 950 does not support even though it's DX9.0.
The GMA 950 has been replaced by the X3100 some months ago, and this new one is MUCH more powerfull and can actually run games. -
the gma 950 should still be able to run cs source and hl2
I have heard ppl run both of these games on the gma 950. =( -
uh i just got my macbook a month ago, and it has gma 950

.
The MacBook can run HL2 pretty well. The only thing I can think of is to update HL2 with the latest patch (should be automatic via Steam), reinstall the Mac Windows Drivers, and if all else fails try reinstalling HL2. Sometimes the problem is that you've updated/installed something and forgot to restart your computer, it sounds silly but try just rebooting first. -
hmm... yeah, i have seen video's and discussions of people who have the intel gma 950 in there macbook, and play those games fine!
i guess ill just try to reinstall some of those things... -
ok, i tired re-installing the mac drivers and half-life 2, but still have the same problems.... what hsould I do???
-
Are you using the latest version of Boot Camp from the Apple site?
-
yeah, I'm running boot camp v1.4

Tyguy, I really don't know what's going on here. I would say to also try reinstalling DX9.0c. Except if that was the problem I think the game would not even load to the black menu screen. You could still try that though.
It's probably an issue with the Mod itself. Did you have this problem before applying Garry's Mod? You may have better luck posting in the Gaming Forum. There is also the Garry's Mod Wiki. Sorry I couldn't help more, peace. -
I have a 2ghz macbook with 1gb of ram. I am going to install steam which I haven't done in quite a while running bootcamp.
I have steam installed and downloading counter strike source now. I'll let you know what happens in a few hours. -

I would suggest downloading the latest drivers from Intel itself. I doubt Boot Camp 1.4 includes the latest drivers.
The latest for XP is 14.31.1 which was just released 8 days ago:

There is 15.6 for Vista that is just 10 days old:

Intel is actually fairly frequent with their driver updates now, after previous criticism and after the purchase of ATI by AMD, so you should check regularly. -
Thank you for the link. I can never find the driver downloads on intel's website.

Steam is slow as crap. I only have 45% of the download so far.
-
I now have 98% downloaded. A review will be up very shortly.

I see people running it on youtube on macbooks. Mine gets to the loading screen where it says loading in the lower right corner. I then got a memory error once and after that a hard freeze in windows XP Pro.
Restart and right after the loading screen the screen turns black and it again locks with some type of error, but since it is black I can't see anything. alt tab does noting, ctr shift esc does nothing and alt ctr delete does nothing.
Crap I was looking forward to playing this again to. -
I found a partial solution now. You need to right click the name in steam and choose properties.
Then you need to click on "set launch items"
Then you need to cut and paste this into the black space provided "-dxlevel 7" without the quotations. The game loads perfectly for me now. Ran a game with 1 bot on medium and got it to be playable. My res was 1280x800. 800x600 runs 2fps faster but looks strange and stretched.
When I tried to join a game it did freeze on me. I'm going to try it again and see if I get a different result this time. -
Game works no crashes or anything. I can alt tab back to windows just fine now. But when I try to find servers is doesn't find any. Drat I got the game working sweet and pretty quick at 640x480 with all options to the minimum to.
Does anyone know how to get it to connect to servers through steam in Windows and bootcamp? -
Someone must know?
-
I now have it working but my performance is quite poor even at 640x480
-
That launch option made it work for me, and everything runs fine now. But for what you were asking, the servers just come up for me in steam automatically. Can you get on the internet on the windows at all or does steam just not work?
