I was at Bestbuy yesterday looking at the new Unibody Macbook pro 13 and noticed that it only had one audio port next to the SD card slot, and it was marked with a headphone icon. I presume that this is the audio out connection. However, what was noticable was the absence of an audio-in connection that is clearly shown on the Apple website photo of the product (below)...

Was the unit I saw simply a fluke, or an "early" unit? Does the "current" new pro 13 have two ports as apple shows, or just one, as on the Bestbuy unit. My current unibody(early 09) has two ports, and I'd hate to lose one by upgrading.

That's the 15" model in the picture. The 13" has a combined audio in/audio out.

    Thanks guys.

So I gather you would need to use some kind of adapter to use a conventional mic with a mini jack, so audio output would not potentially fry the mic and/or also shut off the Mac's speakers.

You don't need an adapter. But since I don't have a unibody macbook I'm not sure how to switch between the port being in and out. But it has the same functionality as two separate ports except for the fact that both in and out cannot be used simultaneously.

There's a place in the System Preferences where you choose it to be in or out.

No additional adaptors are required. The logic board of the Macbook will automatically route the signal of the jack depending on the device plugged in. Note that this is not some amazing new technology, most modern motherboards have been doing this for many years.

Are you sure because I could have sworn there's an option in my System Preferences where I pick if it's Audio In or Audio Out... can't check right now though, since I'm installing Steam games in XP.

Apple might have not implemented the automatic switching, so perhaps it is necessary to set it in System Prefs. But you definitely do not need an adaptor or something to use audio in/out devices.

I never care about whether there is one audio port or 2 ports, though I am using 17 inch unibody.

Can both be run simultaneously? Like ichat with the iphone headphones w/ mic? and since I do music recording I need to be able to hear while recording, does using a USB as an audio input degrade the quality of the sound? Are there any adaptors that have an audio in/out so that they can be used simultaneously?

Well it was news to me not too long ago, when the new 13" MBP came out. I thought it was pretty neat. :D
