I'm going to get oneof the macbook pro's. Is there enough of a difference in performace to justify the extra expense of the 2.53 over the 2.4?
I can get the 4GB kit from crucial for £95. I don't game so the 512MB graphics memory means nothing to me, so it's all about the CPU. I ca save myself £250 by going for the 2.4 so what do you think, is it worth the money?

Hi morgan-X65, I moved this to the Apple forum, where you'll get better and probably faster responses
.
I personally don't think so. If the video memory isn't important to you, then there's nearly no difference between 2.53 and 2.4 GHz, and you can save that 250 Euro for something that will actually make a noticeable difference! -

definitely keep the money in your pockets. the upgrade isn't worth it for your needs.

According to barefeats.com, the 256Mb 8600GT is just as fast as the 512Mb version. The problem with the extra Ram on the video card is the card is not fast enough to take advantage of the extra memory.
Also, the speed difference between 2.4 versus the 2.53 is very minor. -
Like the others are saying, go with the 2.4. I recently used both side by side (both had 4GB Ram) and I had to guy working at Apple throw as much as he could at it, open as much as he could and just get each machine humming. Then i did basic tasks in each.....They both were lightning fast. If there was a difference, and I'm sure there was, I didn't see it (nor did the employee). In fact we had about 15 people standing around watching him do all of this. Save your money. Get the 2.4 and you'll be happy.
All said, I wonder what the performace difference between a MacPro with 2GB ram vs one with 4 would be....or if if the average user wouldn't see anything either.....Hmmmmm -
I don't mean to hi-jack the thread but could the 2.4ghz version play 1080 HD movies? as in no skip frames, etc. My current old Gateway can't even handle 720 T-T

The key is using the right codec, the best drivers, and hopefully your 1080p rip was properly encoded. -
unless you are doing video rendering, animation rendering, or completely processor intensive tasks, you will never notice the difference.
if you aren't doing any of the previously mentioned things, spend the money you save to get AppleCare. -
Thanks guys, it is going to be used for a little bit of general use (word processing, internet, etc) and mostly photoshop work.
I have a nikon D700 and shoot RAW so the most intensive thing the laptop will likely ever be asked to do is batch processing RAW files...
So with that in mind does the advice for getting the 2.4 still stand? -
Frankly, yes.
