Use a flashlight, or just room lighting at different angles to look closely at the screen.... its probably working and you'll see things on it, but the backlight just isn't on. With the right lighting you'll be able to tell that even if you can just barely make out that its on. If its at a log in screen, try to actually log in all the way... if its logged in all the way (or after you get logged in), try using the Screen Brightness buttons to turn up the screen brightness. I've seen that happen a couple times on machines before... it just had the brightness all the way to minimum which turns off the backlight.
If you can see the screen working but the backlight never can get on, it may be dead... you can try hooking up an external monitor and keyboard/mouse... closing the screen and waking it back up with the external and seeing if you can log in that way too... or you don't have to close the screen if you already have the external set up to be primary. -

If I go to apple store they should repair it for me for free n? -
Sometimes that happens, but that usually stops the machine from working... if its working with just no backlight, that could be a different problem. I've seen a few around that year screw up somehow or another and just turn the backlight off for no reasons and you couldn't get it turned back on without getting logged in first, which you couldn't see to do. I was hoping that was more likely the case since it seemed to be working, but dead Geforce 8600Ms are extremely common across many brands. nvidia had a bad issue with those.

Well, if it is the GPU, bringing it to Apple may still be worth a shot. I've heard of people bringing in old liquid-cooled Power Mac G5s and Apple flat out replaces them with brand new base model Mac Pros. So maybe you'll get lucky and they'll either fix your computer or replace it.

MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues
OK Guys I had very interesting day ..
So I went to apple store and booked appoint. with them I was called withing one hour so not bad I explainedto guy what is problem with laptop .. He already knew what is going on and what kind of issues could make problem to laptop..
So firstly he took monitor and connected macbook pro to DVI conn on the right .. nothing came up nosign of work just chime .. he was testing powering on off etc..
Then he left it and asked me to wait a minute .. OK
He cameback with some device connecting to USB and started testing hardware on logic board .. When it finished he connected usb device to his laptop (store one)
And showed me results .. Yes it is GPU faulty .. then he probably knew what I want he went in back again (before he took all laptop details serial etc.. ) when he came back said to me where did I purchase this macbook pro .. I said not in apple store..
He said OK then he went back AGAINand came back with information that this lptop is from USA not EU model
and he showed me original person details who purchased this laptop haha .. I said that is fine I don't need that ..
So we went back in the case and THIS was what I wasn't expected...
He said there was repair plan for FREE (macbooks pros from 2007-2008) because of faulty GPUs .. but unfortunately this repair plan been finished and closed(probably in 2010) So too bad ..
I he said that they still can repair it for 400 pounds hahah I said yeah super  byeee :hi2:
So I was bit upset but .. I was thinking other options ...
We reflowing repairing desktop laptop motherboards in work so I know what issue is .. but I could't wait and I checked on YouTube : macbook pro 2007 no display etc
And there are plenty plenty people reflowing repairnig this board ..
Andthen I foud how few people put whole logic board in the oven in house
I was properly watching the videos (probably 4 different) and I really decided to do the SAME
So I prepared aluminium foil and cooking tray put foil onto tray and made 4 balls from foil to support it underneath(same as on youtube)
Then I turned on oven set the temp. to 195-200 C degrees left it to heat it up
after 10-15 minutes I carefully placed tray with MB into heated up oven and closed and started watching stopwatch for 10 minutes ..
So I have been BBQingmy mabook pro motherboard hahaha
After 10 minutes I have taken out the MB and left it to cool down another 10-15 minnutes..
When MB cooled I started putting back macbook pro to one piece ............
I connected power adapter and pressed power and stood still like some statue
You not gonna believe this BUT ........
MYYYY LAPTOOOP WOOOOORRRKSSS
YEESS  -
Yes, most of these are always going to be a GPU related error with the solder spheres under the BGA. However, oven tricks/heat guns, etc are bad news and it's not a proper repair and it'll last months at best...Btw, the melting point on these lead free solder spheres is 217c-225c max so it sounds like you didn't let it soak long enough so don't be shocked it if goes back to how it was...
This is the type of work I do for a living, these video/no power related issues, I spent over $2k on an automated BGA machine and I love waking up and going to the shop to work on these things. I enjoy repairing what other pc shops cannot and deem bad/dead.Glad you were able to get it going yourself to save you some $$$$$$
