Hm, I really wonder if MBP O/C can break 5k barrier on winxp pro @1280x800 ;)

yeah at 12x8 but probably not very likley with the full resolution of 12x10.

I have the same card in my c90 256mb 8600gt GDDR3 and so far I am at about 4800 at 12x10. My memory is going high its 3dmark stable at over 800mhz (1600mhz effective) but my core is not going as high as everybody elses I think 550 is already too high 500 seems to be rock solid tho.

So now i need to find the balance point on where i may be able to raise my core higher if I lower memory speeds and where the best performance gains are and good temps.

Those results are impressive, what are the odds you would see the same kind of improvement on a 2.2 Ghx sys with the 128 MB card?

Well, with 169.01 drivers overclocked to 590/740 on my MBP 2.4/256mb I got 4966 at 1280x1024 on 3DMark06, so I think the answer to your wondering is 'it already can'.

    Hi,

I've the very same MAC laptop and i was really surprised that you were able to OC is that hi without any PROBLEMS.

I installed the 169.04 drivers which actually do allow OC but i have to mention that in the middle of the installation it asked for some additional files that were not in the 169.04 - so i had to combine and supply there files from the 168.xx drivers. Did you ever encounter this?

What kind of drivers are you using now? I've LEOPARD is i've updated the bootcamp to 2.0 - but never tried to OC the standard drivers as i though it's crap as i've found out when playin Arena OBLIVION - the default drivers sucked so badly and installing 168.xx was DRAMATIC increase in speed.

Recently i've tried the CRYSIS demo, it's a killer and demanding, but still playable on MEDIUM details. But when i tried to OC a bit with the 169.04 drivers i've go immediately some shimmering artifacts all over the screen...

What would you recommend? Did you try the Crysis demo?

The standard Boot Camp 2.0 ForceWare drivers are the same drivers that were in Boot Camp Beta v1.4. As far as I can tell, they have not been updated. If you want to have the latest graphics drivers, use LaptopVideo2Go. New drivers are released too frequently for Apple to keep up.

The only files you need are the Driver and the Modded INF. If you haven't already, read the Quickstart Guide and follow the instructions for XP or Vista. You may need to use Driver Cleaner before installing new drivers.

It's really not necessary to overclock. I play the Crysis SP Demo with 169.04 in Windows XP at stock clock speeds and the framerates are acceptable with Medium settings. If you must overclock, try the latest version of RivaTuner.

I'm familiar with the laptop2govideo and INF modified files.
I've found this thread on this forum that claims some great OC results:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2655657#post2655657

othes claim that they can OC:
with 169.01 drivers overclocked to 590/740 on my MBP 2.4/256mb I got 4966 at 1280x1024 on 3DMark06, so I think the answer to your wondering is 'it already can'.

and that sounds very cool... i'll be playing with this again more.

I messed around with Crysis this afternoon and some settings can be put to high with the 169.01 drivers, texture detail and water detail to be specific. The thing that kills performance the most is shader level. As long as that's set on medium and you're not trying to run with anti-aliasing, performance is good at 1024x768 and actually decent at 1152x864. It's too bad the demo doesn't allow 1280x800, which I find odd because 1280x768 is accepted.

I've been contemplating building a separate desktop PC for Crysis, but I don't think I'll be doing that now. The demo runs surprisingly well, and the retail version should be further optimized still. I also overclocked my GPU to 550/700 and didn't notice any artifacts.

I've installed the latest 169.04 and did the DX10 mods on DX9 under WIN XP. Crysis was playable about 20fps as you wrote above at 1152x864 at MEDIUM shader and all the rest at HIGH except shades and textures. OC to 585/900

I've elevated the back of the laptop with a thin book to create more separation from the table to allow better ventilation and the game was stable. I wish i could play this with shaders on HIGH since it looks so incredible... but the i get about 12fps

Too bad my mbp only oc up to 560/740 :( And I get around 4500 in 3dmark06...

One question - i've 4GB ram on the MACBOOK pro and running XP 32bit - would you recommend to get 64 bit XP version? I don't know if it's even compatible etc. for games. If so, how is the performance 64 vs. 32 ???

I haven't been able to overclock 169.04 or 169.09 on my MBP 2.4ghz 256mb... only 169.02, and then only by disabling Powermiser in the INF and using Rivatuner 2.05. I find Rivatuner 2.06 doesn't keep the overclocking settings, nor does it have a test button to test the oc settings?

For those that are having success with 169.04 or 09 in overclocking, what are the necessary uninstall/install/overclock steps?

    Much obliged :)

Also, does the new MBP 1.2 'graphics stability' firmware update have any positive or negative effects? particularly on overclocking?

Alright, after a very long hiatus, I've posted new overclocking results. Using drivers 169.02 on 3dMark06 with the same clock speeds as the first overclock I've increased 500 points to 4941.... lol so with a little more tweaking >5000 points is going to be easy.

Edit: Cranked the clock up to 600 and memory to 800 and got a 5089. Not sure how much higher I can go but it looks like the major factor in the increase now is the clock speed and at 620 I got artifacts... but at least the MBP passed 5K!

Just finished testing Crysis. At 1024x768 on HIGH during gameplay with no overclock I got around 13fps average while when it went to cut scene this number dips to about 8. When overclocked I got 17fps during gameplay and 10.5 during cut scene. About to test quake wars now.

EDIT: Maxed my gfx card at 610/950 with a score of 5287. This is probably the best a Macbook Pro can get without upgrading to 4gb of ram.

    CRYSIS
    -STOCK
    Gameplay-13
    Cutscene-8

    600/800
    Gameplay-17
    Cutscene-10.5

    610/950
    Gameplay-18.5
    Cutscene-11.5

Also just added new benchmarks for Lost Planet and FEAR (60 fps!) and now all benchmarks should have the new results.
