Most of those games are older though. What about newer games?

So why is the 8600 performing worse than the 7600?

I think that the OSX drivers are not that good yet. The gaming performance in windows is much better than in OSX with the 8600

it's not only the drivers. The 8600mGT (M!!! means mobile) is actually only as fast or even slower than the 7600. A lot of people are disappointed by that since the x600 series of one generation of graphics cards always turned out great. Well this time, for the GeForce 8 it's not that great!

As I said. Even the desktop 8600 is slower then the 7600 desktop version. A fair bit! Now, if this is due to the small number of shader units or the clock speed I don't know, you would have to do more reading into this.

Anyway, the 8600m is way faster than the x1600! Just not anywhere near the 8600 desktop which is not anywhere near the 8800 series. So don't expect too much from it. It's just a laptop card! The only REAL feature of this is its DirectX 10 capability, which the 7600 doesn't have!

I'm almost positive that the iMac uses mobile parts, so the 7600 in question is in fact the 7600 GO. The 8600 should be faster.

All I can say is the 8600m GT performs comparably to a 7900gs. I'm getting 3750+ in 3DMark06 with the 2.4GHz MBP - so very happy with the performance compared to a go6600 or x1600.

Yes is that at default 3DMark06 setting or 1280x800? What OS?

My 2.4 MBP running Vista Ultimate on Bootcamp scores:

4065 at stock Apple video card speed
    4587 at 527 / 755 overclocked video card

Try playing an actual game. I think you'll be unpleasantly surprised by how the 8600GT fares in actual games compared to the 7900GS.

    so annoyed.

the 8600m gt surpasses the 7600 by a wide margin.

regardless of 3dmark scores, in real world performance the 8600m gt approximates a 7900 gs. obviously they are fundamentally different cards, so it depends on settings, resolution, anti aliasing, texture filtering, etc.

whatever. they are close. no surprise there, pleasant or otherwise. pretty blunt.

lurkers, stop spreading the "8600 is worse than 7600" nonsense. it needs to die.

The 7600 card in the review is the DESKTOP 7600, not the mobile version (since it's in the iMac).
As randfee previously wrote, the mobile 8600GT is not as powerful as the desktop 7600, and nobody expected it to be, don't forget it's a mobile card. However, the 8600GT is indeeed quite a bit faster than the mobile 7600/7700/X1600, no doubt about it. It's a great card indeed, almost twice as fast as the mobile 7600.

I don't understand why people are so disappointed with it's performance. Naturally it won't be faster than the 7900gs/gtx, you really can't ask expect that much from it, it's not an enthusiast model like the 7900gs/gtx. I find it quite impressive that it's practically on par with the 7900gs!
I know that I'm happy with my new MBP, it runs Supreme Commander with almost twice the fps compared to my previous lappy with the X1600! :)

if you want to shell out for a gaming laptop, you will at least want an 8800m.

if you want to shell out 5 grand for a gaming laptop, you will want to wait for 8800m sli.

whenever those things come out is the good time to get it.
