Ok, until recently I thought my Macbook Pro was bulletproof, nothing ever went wrong and I thought it was the best notebook in the world.

But that opinion of it is diminishing.

My problem is the stupid built in Airport. At my house, we have a good wireless N router. The MBP always maintains a connection and it's fine.

BUT, when I'm at work, or at school, which is 80% of my time, the connection is not N (don't know if type N or G has anything to do with it), the MBP drops the connection whenever it is inactive for short periods of time.

For example...I read a 5 page long article on neurotransmitters, and then try to go back, and I get the "Safari unable to open window" screen. Then, what I do is I turn OFF Airport, then instantly turn it back ON. Once it is connected I try refreshing the page and it's fine.

I did the exact same thing at home (Read the 5 pages, then hit back), and it maintains its connection (no connection drop).

It is really annoying me, to the point where I will buy a new laptop. Why is it dropping the connection? I think it may have something to do with the strength of the connection. Then again, my friends' laptops never drop the connection like my MBP does. OR, it may have something to do with the fact that the MBP is made of metal...?

I'm really pissed off and I'm starting to hate the MBP. Anybody know why it is doing this?

I don't know why you're having an issue like this, but maybe it's just your wireless card on the fritz? Are you close enough to an Apple store to take it in for an inspection? If not, smarter people than I will probably have better answers soon.

FWIW, my own MBP is about 18 months old, I guess, and I've never had any problems with it. But issues crop up sooner or later with nearly every computer. I hope you find a quick fix. Good luck.

    It could be the card.

Is it possible to upgrade the wireless card to a better one? There is an Apple service center near me, and I'm sure they would do the upgrade (if there is such upgrade to begin with).

you can't upgrade to a better card, but the card in the mbp is fine. if your card is wonked (it sounds like it might be) they will replace it.

your wireless shouldn't be randomly dropping out.

hmm... sounds very similar to my case but with using an airport extreme base + home telephone bandwidth interfering.

Everytime the home phone is used or even turned on or get a phone call, my 15" 2.5Ghz mbp (that I had) wifi would drop everytime until the phone is hung up or stopped ringing.

Ever since then I sold the airport extreme and now using a linksys wireless N router with some settings tweaked so now my phone can ring all day without any problems and no more dropped signals whatsoever.

Unfortunately, Apple skimped on the latest round of wireless cards. They used to use Atheros chips in the older models, but with Santa Rosa, they started using Broadcom cards. I've had nothing but troubles with Broadcom, and it was one of the reasons I upgraded to a new Asus laptop.

hardly, a properly functioning Wireless card is all you needed to solve your "problems"

why are there so many people trolling the Apple forums to post nothing but negative unhelpful comments? Helping people is the purpose here, not explaining why one thing is good or bad, just actual help, what ever that may entail.

    What?

"Oh noes, stop bashing my poor defenceless Apple! Think of the children!"

People do also need to be aware of bad products, so they can steer clear of them in the future. Hopefully Apple will switch back to better hardware in the future, then I might be able to reconsider them.

It could be a problem with the wireless network itself, or the way that it is set up.
Do other people have the same problem? If they do are they on a mac too?

I suffered from different problems with WiFI, sometimes with a MacBook Pro, sometimes with a T41, sometimes with a z60m, sometimes with a LG Notebook.

We want that all run properly, but sometimes it's not possible. I discovered that when my neightbour use the XBox my wifi become afected. Sometimes when a car with bomb protection arrive at my street I loose my wifi.

You have to isolate your problem, them look for a solution.

The MacBook Pro is the less problematic notebook that I have and I have many, in relation with WIFI.

As an example the ThinkPad loose the wifi every 1 hour, why I do not know, I have just to press disconect and reconect and I have wifi again. Why happen? Weel seen that If the wifi module loose the conection for 5 minutes become blocked. Why its loose the connection if I just sit 2 meters again the wofo router? Well I do not exactly, but seen that some neightbour should be using the same channel and make interferences.
