I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro from early 2008, the very first generation.
This has been happening more frequently as of late...

Either it's this or some other random flickering and it becomes non responsive. When the flickering stops I still have no control because although the cursor moves, it won't respond to any clicking. Hot corners does not work either. Nothing. Need to do a cold reboot every time.
Could this be a video issue? It usually happens more frequently with the nvidia 9600 enabled, but it does occur on the 9400 as well.

Can you monitor temps?
-
Temps were about 75 degrees C. When I play a HD youtube clip it can reach 85 degrees C.

I don't care about the temps. Gpu has been fried. It is either defective or damaged by heat. Have you ever overclocked it? -
It's definitely video related. The GeForce 8600M GT is known to implode (mine did).
Call Apple and ask. I don't know if they still run the replacement program, but they will most likely replace it free of charge (even if it's out of warranty). -
Woops I meant to say that it's a *late* 2008 MacBook pro. It has the 9400/9600 dual GPUs. I know that they extended wars tees for the early non unibody models, but not so sure about the newer ones.

Wow, what a cool display!

Does it occur when you hook it up to an external monitor?
-
Yes check with an external monitor, and if the same thing happens then you know your video card is pooped, but if it shows a normal image on the external drive then maybe consider replacing the LVDS Cable
Macbook Pro on its way out?
