Hey All,
I am wondering what is the easiest way to connect and properly operate a Logitech Z-5500 surround sound system from my new macbook pro 15inch. Do i have to get a new sound card? Or is there some sort of cable that I can buy instead?
Thank you all,
TJ

The most economical solution would be to plug a toslink cable to the Z-5500. You should get a toslink cable with the 3.5mm adapter.

I have the exact same setup as you, but I find that the sound quality isn't as good as a digital connection that I have with my PC desktop through a real sound card.
But using the toslink cable is the cheapest way to go, and still, the sound is enough for a house party. -
A major contributing factor in the poorer quality sound likes in that Z-5500's built-in decoder is not very great. The fact that the signal processing onboard the mac face a degree of noise onboard doesn't help either. Nevertheless, it will do fine.

Hm... maybe I will just go with a Logitech 2.1... the 150 or so dollar stereo instead and spend more on the home theatre system/a system in my car then haha

Can anyone link me to the toslink cable thing... I have no idea which one is right, thank you.

You add this on top of a standard S/PDIF toslink cable. you can buy them online at monoprice for a decent price.

Given the price of Z-5500, I'd suggest you to get something like Klipsch Quintet and pair it up with a receiver, which you actually can hook up to your mac using the same toslink cable and adapter.
