If I was to use a macbook black. Could I output the display to a 20" widescreen flat panel dell monitor using the max resolution (1680x1050) or will it only display at the macbook screen's max resolution which is 1280 x 800?

    Please let me know ASAP

i dont think so for your laptop to support that resolution you need a graphic card sumthing like gefor go 7600gtx or any other graphuc card that is gt or gtx but i aint sure......

The GMA950 will support up to 2048x1536. I'm not sure what resolutions are all supported on the Macbook under OX X because the display panel only seems to show what resolutions are available on monitors that are or have been connected.

I've used up to 1600x1200 (under Linux) but I do not know if the MacBook specifically supports 1680x1050 because I do not have a monitor with that resolution.

"The maximum resolution supported on "Apple DVI displays" is 1920x1200 and 1600x1200 on VGA displays." I'm guessing you'd also have to make it the primary display to have a resolution greater than your macbook..thus making the macbook a secondary display while it's connected. Someone else can answer that for you perhaps?

It will support higher resolutions on the connected monitor than on the built-in display. The 1280x800 limitation is one of the display, not one of the GMA 950. As jimbo says, up to 2048x1536 is the theoretical max, 1680x1050 will not be a problem.

yes you definitely aren't at all sure and definitely wrong.

and BTW, why don't people ever think to just take 5 seconds and look at the website of the manufacturer??

    http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html

    Graphics and video support

    * Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory(3)
    * Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors

before you post a question here try and do a little bit of research.

so why doesn't OSX have the option to just display an image only on an external display???

Actually OS X has that capability - at least on a MacBook. If your MacBook is sleeping, leave it closed and connect power, external monitor, keyboard & mouse (wired or bluetooth) and your MacBook will wake up and display only on your external monitor. You can open your MacBook at that point and will still only be in External Only mode unless you sleep/wake or discover displays.

It'll work if you connect to an external display via DVI. I doubt that VGA will, through OSX, be able to drive a 1680x1050 picture. Buy the miniDVI-DVI converter from Apple and you'll be set.
