For some reason I always had an idea that it was a 32 bit machine but is it 64bit?

Every Core 2 Duo is 64-bit capable.

Core 2 Duo is 64-bit capable.

    but then you need...

    64-Bit OS
    4+ GB Ram
    64-Bit Applications

all mac os's are 32 bit but when snow leopard comes out that will be the first apple 64 bit os and all intel based mac supports 64 bit operating systems.

    I hope that helped

wrong. Leopard(10.5) is some sort of "hybrid" between 32 and 64 bit-it can support 32bit and 64bit programs.

Not all Intel Macs are 64 bit machines... only ones with Core 2 Duo or Xeon processors ... the early ones that were Core Duo or Core Solo are 32 bit processors.

Leopard is indeed a hybrid, sort of like Windows 95 was with 16 and 32-bit. Snow Leopard has both a 32-bit and 64-bit 'version' so to speak, so no compatability worries.

And you don't need more than 4 GBs of RAM to run a 64-bit operating system. And 32-bit applications run perfectly fine.

so if I buy the macbook pro 13 inch base model (2gb of RAM) then upgrade to snow leopard then eventually upgrade my ram to 4gb, it will be 64 bit?

If you buy the MBP 13" it will already be 64bit. I.e. the 13" MBP will be able to utilise all of the memory if you decide to put 8GB of RAM in it.

all macs at present are 64bit. It's just that they use 32bit apps.
