Sorry if there has been a previous thread about this topic, but i recently bought a high end gaming computer, and I love it, and I do need it. But as you might have guessed, Its not so great on portability or battery life, so I'm looking for a macbook to take about to school and what not. I'm looking at either a macbook pro 13 or air 13, both base models. Since I just bought an alienware m14x for heavy computing and gaming, i really dont need a very powerful mac, should I settle with the air 13 or just get the pro? Thanks

well return the m14x and get a gaming notebook, one that justifies the weight and really has something powerful inside or whatever get a desktop
THEN get something portable enough for your needs, i.e. mba or the UX31, or the U300s, or the acer something something, or the toshiba Z830 -
Don't sell the Alienware. The M14x is just fine for gaming, so long as you aren't focused on playing every game at max graphics settings. And it's wicked cool.
I'd definitely go with the MBA 13 over the MBP 13. The MBA has a SSD; the MBP has a full-power i5 instead of a low-voltage. For day-to-day tasks, the SSD should more than make up the CPU difference, I'd think. Add in the better screen and the cooler form factor for the MBA 13, and it's the clear winner. -
I have owned a air in the past as well as a regular macbook pro and I prefer the air. The air is a funny thing it never impressed me and I never really wanted one until one day I splurged. ever since after owning one the air is definitely better. I wont be buying any more macbook pros. just the air line now.

the deal here are the premises of the m14x, lets go through those:
- portable
- powerful
- blings
the only thing that the m14x fills here is the blings req. its simple as that, and since you are going to go for a portable set up, either get a true gaming laptop or go cheaper with a desktop.
For example to have the same power as the np8150 which is a true game laptop at close size to what the m14x is (not to mention weight), you will spend 1500 for a setup that is more than 2x more powerful in games. For the m17x you are going to go close to 2k. To get a desktop of same power you are going to go for 700 bucks. its simple as that. Either get something more powerful that aint that much powerful like the m18x, or go for a desktop -
I don't think the original poster asked us whether he should sell the M14x. I don't think he said he was unsatisfied with it in any way. To the contrary, this thread is about what machine he should buy in addition to the M14x he already has (and likely has no plans to sell).
Just because a Chevy Corvette offers more performance for a given price point than a Porsche Cayman, doesn't mean the Cayman isn't a performance car, or you can't do performance driving in a Cayman. It's just a lower-performance-but-more-refined option amongst the various performance cars at that price point. An Alienware M14x is a gaming laptop, even though it's not the highest-performance gaming laptop on the market for its $1099 price point. -
Thank you Mitlov, and yes I have no plans to sell my M14x. I bought it for gaming. And I bought the macbook air 13 inch. Thank you guys for your help. Its an amazing machine.
