Hey all, I was wondering if anyone knew the model screen used on the mbp 17 inchers? Is it WLED or RGB because I took a look at them at best buy and they have one of the best screens I've seen. Clear whites (ie not grainy) and good color reproduction. Thanks.

True, someone out there running Win7, go into device manager and post the Panel ID.
-
I did some research and I think it's either LG LP171WU5 and/or LP171WU6. I think both are WLED.
-
There's also a Samsung LTN 17" out there. IMHO, that might be the better looking screen.
Btw, the panel can be ascertained easily in Mac OS X by looking at the 4-character model number in ColorSync, or more specifically by running a UNIX terminal command. -

It appears it is the LP171WU6 which hopefully is a variant of the LP171WU5 which is a rockin Panel. I had one in my RGB LED M6400 last year.

I don't see a panel ID value in the device manager for the monitor. I do see these, though:
Hardware Ids: APP9CD0
Compatible Ids: PNP09FF
Generic PNP monitor.
hope that helps. I tried to look at my colorsync profile, but that information was unlisted. perhaps because it's a custom color profile (I have a calibrator). -
I'm not sure what type of panel the WU6 is but I know the WU7 is WLED.

APP 9CD0 = LTN170CT10 = Samsung panel
They are offered in both glare and anti-glare versions.
It is also the version used in the Core 2 Duo Macbook Pros.
6-bit display.
Did you go glossy or anti glare? -
antiglare.

Sometimes Lavasys Everest can read out the panel type where other software can't.
-
The MBP 17 uses the same 6-bit panel as the W700/ds. The M6400/M6500 and Elitebook 8730w use an 8-bit panel in their RGBLED models.

Aye, the M6400/M6500 and 8730w use a LP171WU5 or similarly OEM spec'd panel. (8-bit RGBLED panel)
In addition, the upcoming HP 8740w is using a 10-bit IPS panel (Dreamcolor 2). That right there is butter on the biscuits. -
that is indeed butter and biscusts. if it ever actually launches, anyway. lol

I have an M6400 with the LG LP171WU5, I believe it is a matte lcd behind an edge-to-edge display. The only problem I have with it is, I am not sure if it is due to the nature of matte displays, but it seems to have a slight bit of graininess, especially noticeable on white backgrounds. Certainly not a huge issue but the clear whites on the mbp 17" I've seen are so beautiful. I wonder if all the LP171WU5 are this way (slightly grainy) or could the glossy versions be void of this particularly blemishing feature.
