I recently got a macbook pro 15.4 2Ghz. I wanted a notebook with the core duo processor and decided to give the mac a try after many years of using pcs. Unfortunately after opening the box, the problems started immediately. The first thing I noticed was the screen appeared slightly warped on one side and did not close flush with the case. After booting up for the first time and completing the configuration for OSX I started up safari. WiFi was easy to setup but kept dropping the signal. The underside of the notebook started to get really hot and after a brief amount of time OSX crashed and stated an error had occured and a reboot would be necessary. After restarting, the crashes continued to happen. I must have rebooted 7-8 times before hanging it up for the night. Macs don't crash? wrong. When I called CompUSA the next day about the problem the manager accused me of lying and told me if the screen was warped I must have done something to it. I took it in at his request to have a technician look at it and they said nothing was wrong with it and it must have gone into sleep mode.
For anyone interested in the mbp I would highly advise saving your money and getting something else. There are a lot of people reporting similar problems. Hopefully these problems will be fixed in the next generation of intel mac notebooks. As for CompUSA, they have horrible customer service. I would never spend my hard earned money there again.
I ended up getting a refund and buying a HP dv8000. It came with double the memory as the mbp, 17 inch screen, dual 100GB HDs, 256 nVidia card, more USB slots, etc. The best part is I got it for $500 less than the mbp plus a $50 mail in rebate. I am very happy with this notebook. It's very fast and never heats up. The only downside is the weight which is not a big deal.

sorry about your defective notebook. but there are still many out there that are fine. Every batch of machines will have a few lemons. you just happened to get one of them. My guess is that there might have been a faulty fan causing it to heat up and then lockup.
generally i find customer service really anoying. when i had to take in one of my notebooks one time, before i took it in, i mentioned it had a stress fracture, and first thing they said was that it was user damage. which of course it wasn't, they always want to blame the consumer so that they don't have to pay for it. -
Flaw with the mbp? its starts fires! XD

A defective product doesn't represent "flaws".

To tell you the truth, it seems as though you did not really give it much of a chance. Why not try to exchange it for a working one? Also, I would imagine you did not do a software update which would have remedied your Wi-Fi no doubt.
Sorry to hear about you experience, good luck with the HP. Hopefully it works out better! -
It would have been hard to give it more of a chance given the frequent crashes. This combined with the bad wi-fi signal made it impossible to download anything. So no, I did not do a software update.
I guess I could have exchanged it for another but at the time I was extremely upset and didn't want to take a chance getting another defective notebook that CompUSA would deny had any problems. -

The greatest flaw of all, is that it's too pretty.... (or mayb it's not a flaw rather a compliment, haha)

So for all those buying Macs for the first time, get the software updates before you do anything else. Since it is a closed system Apple has the ability to fix many things through simple software updates. Also, if you experience issues, MacFixIt is a great place to find out more on the problem. -
One thing I really like about Macs is that the screen quality is almost perfect!
A friend using MBP has the same wallpaper when using Bootcamp and Mac OS but the same picture when on Mac OS looks so much better. I think Windows can learn a few tricks from Mac and hopefully will show when Vista comes out.
Macs are very user friendly but I notice that it easily gets scratches and the keyboard area gets uncomfortably warm after just an hour. -

Can't wait to see how Mac will improve my life! -

You should have called AppleCare instead . . .
They would promptly have fixed your problems or replaced the unit for you. -
I had the same problem as you with the kernel panics, saying there was an error and it needed to shutdown. I looked on the appl support online and many people had the same problem. But it mostly occured in macbook pros made during weeks 20-22, just a bad batch I guess. It turns out it only occurs when using wireless internet and downloading large files. So I called apple and they declared my notebook dead on arrival, so I went to the Apple store for a replacement and got it within 5 minutes. I guess my point is that all companies will make some defective computers. But it was easy to replace it with Apple and my new one works great.
