Does the Apple Care protect against accidental damage, like if you drop it and something happens to it? Also the normal warranty that comes with it is there a difference in coverage from the Apple care?

Neither the standard warranty or the extended apple care warranty protect against accidental damage. The apple care extension that you can buy extends the warranty from 1 to 3 years and technical support over the phone from 3 months to 3 years.

so for $400 it doesn't cover accidental? Well Dell has them beat there. So from what was quoted above, if I buy the apple care 1 month before the other warranty expires it would only give me up to 3 years from the day the laptop was bought? So 2 more years? I don't like that, it's $200 a year. :|

As WilliamG said, don't buy applecare from Apple. There are many online retailers that sell it for half that price. I got mine for my MBP for $199. It's at least $100 less at just about every retailer out there. Oh, and it's well worth it even without the accidental coverage.

it is $349 for MBP and $249 for a MB, and $169 for an iMac, substantially less if you are a student, and Apple is very good honoring student discounts in store and online, not to mention offering rebates on multiple things when purchasing a Mac.
Dell can afford to provide better warranty coverage for less because their hardware is worth a lot less, and they sell a lot more machines, I would bet overall Dell makes a lot more than Apple does when considering only extended warranties.
consider this, AppleCare usually pays for itself the first time you have a problem, say the keyboard fails for some reason, you will be paying at least a few hundred $ to have it replaced if you pay out of pocket. -
I am in the same place as you Seshan, I am looking at both Dell and Apple and Apple having no accidental warranty is a defenite turn off for me. I know people say accidental warranties are just for careless people but going off to college it would nice to have that peace of mind in case someone else has an accident near my laptop. I am still completely up in the air on it haha.

I think actually taking the time to test out the Mac and compare it to the Dell the decision will be much simpler, it is easiest when it comes down to cost.
-
Wait you can buy apple care from other places? How does that work, is it just a card that you activate or something?

I've never seen anyone actually put their accidental protection warranty to use. Learn some responsibility and take care of your laptop.
